Delaware’s governor will make an announcement on Vice-President-elect Joe Biden’s Senate seat this afternoon, with speculation swirling that a placeholder will be chosen to warm the seat for Biden’s son.

A release from Gov. Ruth Ann Minner’s (D) office said she will make an announcement regarding the seat at a 2:30 p.m. press conference.

Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden (D) is his father’s most likely successor, but has been deployed to Iraq and cannot run for the seat for two years. As a result, many expect Minner to pick a lower-profile candidate who might be replaced by Biden upon his return.

Suggestions that longtime Biden adviser Ted Kaufman could be appointed to the seat has intensified this speculation. Lt. Gov. John Carney (D) has also been seen as a possible candidate.

Beau Biden has said he will not accept an appointment to the seat, which his father has yet to resign.
