Happy Festivus!!!!

Filed in National by on December 23, 2008

I almost forgot.  Today is December 23rd.  Christmas Eve Eve.   But it is also Festivus!   A Festivus for the Rest of Us.

So join in the Festivus spirit!  Air your grievances! Use this thread to lash out against friends, family, the world, President Bush or your ever devoted writers at Delaware Liberal.

For your holiday enjoyment, please relive the origin of Festivus:

Frank Costanza: Many Christmases ago, I went to buy a doll for my son. I reached for the last one they had, but so did another man. As I rained blows upon him, I realized there had to be another way.

Cosmo Kramer: What happened to the doll?

Frank Costanza: It was destroyed. But out of that a new holiday was born: a Festivus for the rest of us!

George Costanza: Oh, God.

Frank Costanza: And at the Festivus dinner, you gather your family around, and tell them all the ways they have disappointed you over the past year!

Cosmo Kramer: And is there a tree?

Frank Costanza: No, instead, there’s a pole. It requires no decoration. I find tinsel distracting. It’s made from aluminum. Very high strength-to-weight ratio.

I’d like to start by giving a jolly fuck you to the calendar year of 2008 (political history not in scope of that jolly-ness). May you or similar ones ever rear it’s f’ing head again.

    Salut!

  2. delawaredem says:

Oh, so you are not talking about 2008 being the worst political year for the GOP since 1932?

  3. RSmitty says:

Nah, I expected that. It’s why I focused locally. Seriously, I have a lot of personal disdain for events in 2008, one of which I’ve been commenting about here and there. I have a deeply pessimistic feeling it’s going to lead to very excruciating moments in 2009, but moments that will at least allow for some rebuilding. So, again, fuck you, 2008.

  4. delawaredem says:

I’m intrigued. What are these excruciating moments in 2009 that you forsee?

    excruciating moments in 2009

    Couric/Walters interviews with Bush, Cheney.

    The Smitty bailout package.

I only comment on this, because the “shame” society puts on people for these issues is itself shameful, yet I do feel immense pressure from the stereotype. The commenting actually keeps me from going into a deep depression or postal…or both.

We are in a financial crisis, brought about from some over-zealous decisions a few years ago (which, at the time was quite affordable, but hindsight has a different story), but thrown into chaos when my wife was hit head-on by a person who was passing over a double-yellow…at 50MPH (both my wife and the other person). It’s a story I mentioned before, so keeping it brief, the person who hit my wife was at legal-minimum coverage and our coverage for underinsured came into play. The ins co fought the amount to pay. They agreed the policy was in effect, but the amount was disputed. Three years later and binding arbitration, we left devastated. We had a child within that three years and came away learning that we were negligent for having our daughter, and ultimately, the arbitration amount reduced.

(forgive spelling and lyric errors) O-bla-dee, O-bla-da, Life Goes On, braaaaa, Oh how that life goes on…

We made mistakes on prioritizing the resulting bills and subrogations, so basically, we fucked ourselves by allowing my wife to stay in her lane and get hit head on, but hey, I’m not bitter.

Something needs to come to a head in 2009 and I am hoping for the higher road, but if I must do what I feel overly pessimistic about, then so be it. Whatever does happen, it will represent the point of the start of return, making 2009 no possibly worse than 2008. So, to that I say, “Fuck you, 2008!”

Oh, and to what I think is your point, yes, stay tuned to RSmitty.

A huge disappointment – John Daniello and the rest of his mob. I challenge him to the feats of strength.

I’d like to invite anonone to the Festivus pole!

  9. anonone says:

    Hey Rsmitty,

Thanks for the invitation. I hope that 2009 is brighter and better for you and your family! And I’d be happy to celebrate something with you – but not Festivus. My family doesn’t disappoint me so I’d have nothing to say.

  10. RSmitty says:

    😛

Knucklehead, and I say that with the warmest friendship.

I look at Frank Costanza’s description as flawed. He cited an incident with a stranger as the impetus of Festivus, but yet says it’s about telling your family about how they disappointed you.

So, to that I ask, which is it Frank? How a stranger affected you, or how your family affected you? Eh, regardless, we are one, big, highly disfunctional blogging (and commenting) family, so step up to the Festivus pole!

Excruciating events of 2009 to look forward to:
    More Sarah Palin
    The Blagojevich circus
    Depression
    Republican blockades
