Hugo Chavez Has Been Oiling Up Sarah Palin

Filed in National by on January 6, 2009

Our friend Elwood Foreclift over at I Eat Gravel (Alaska) asks a serious question, “Without Hugo Chavez, how will rural Alaskans survive?”

Over the past two years, Venezuela President Hugo Chavez gave village families more than $16 million worth of heating fuel through his country’s government-owned oil company, Citgo Petroleum.

What?! This is a joke, right? For three freaking months we have to listen to that Wasilla redneck lecture us about her “energy knowledge”. Next, I’m going to find out that Palin really can’t see Russia from her doorstep.

Citizens Energy, the Boston-based nonprofit that oversees the program, announced Monday that the free fuel is on hold as Citgo tries to recover from sinking oil prices and a wounded world economy.

Oops, I guess after Chavez is done spreading some Venezuelan crude all over Palin. Hey, Sarah, I don’t think he’s going to be taking you to the Iditarod this year.

Politics aside, Monday’s announcement arrived amid a punishing cold snap and painful fuel prices. It is rotten news for villagers who were counting on hundreds of dollars of free heating oil to offset the winter’s crippling fuel costs.

People, this is seriously f’ed up. Maybe Palin can spare some designer threads for some of her constituents to help keep them warm.

Update: It’s seriously cold in Alaska right now. CabinDweller over at FieryBlazingHandbasket tells us how freaking cold it is with I’d Whine About It, But I Have No Idea How Cold It Is. Umm, I know you Alaskans are a proud people, but you might want to consider moving. 😉

Didn’t Gov. GILF mail each resident (that’s resident, not family) more than $3000 last year as part of Alaska’s oil dividend program or whatever it’s called? Whatever the amount, it was an increase of more than $1000 from the previous year. Perhaps the guv should have advised the citizens of Alaska to put the money away in case they needed it for a necessity, like heating fuel.

I’m not saying Chavez should stop his oil-sharing program or that communities should not participate. Whatever his motivations, it’s a lifesaver for many communities. But when something like this inevitably happens, the survival of entire villages should not rest on the generosity of one person, especially if that person is Hugo Chavez.

  2. How can oil prices drop and still be painful to fill the oil tank? Doesn’t heating oil follow the basic pricing of diesel, since it is basically the same thing? I am sure $2.50/gallon is alot less painful than $4.50/gallon.

What am I missing here? Is it the spin to feel sympathy?

  3. nemski says:

Another Mike, FYI the price of gas in Alaska is much higher than the lower 48.

At the Shell station at E Palmer-Wasilla Hwy & Trunk Rd in Wasilla, a gallon of gas goes for $2.39. Compare that the Wawa at Airport Rd & Churchmans Rd in New Castle, $1.49.

  4. nemski says:

Heating oil in Alaska, $3.39. And remember it isn’t Delaware cold there, it’s literally freeze your balls off cold.

    Nice tags.

In other Palin news. She had Levi’s Johnston’s Mom’s drug bust pushed back until after the election.

    Classy!

How Republicans can show their stupid faces in public is beyond me.

  6. Yeah, I read the freakin’ article, -58 degrees. Eesh. We’re not talking a tank and a half a year cold…

When you’re keeping up over 100 degrees of heat difference, that’s some serious BTU’s.

It’s as dumb as living in the desert.

  8. X Stryker says:

Maybe instead of giving every Alaskan, no matter how wealthy, a crisp three grand, she should save some of that money to buy oil FROM HER OWN OIL FIELDS to keep her own citizens from freezing to death.

You just picture her going, “Oh, gee, keep rural villages from freezing to death or help everybody buy toboggans, oh, and also too what a dilemma…”

Oh God will Sarah ever go away
