Strike on Gaza School Kills 30

Filed in National by on January 6, 2009

The BBC reports:

At least 30 people were killed and 55 injured when Israeli artillery shells landed outside a United Nations-run school in Gaza, UN officials have said.

A number of children were among those who died when the al-Fakhura school in the Jabaliya refugee camp was hit, doctors at nearby hospitals said.

Israel said its soldiers had come under fire from militants inside the school.

Earlier, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) warned of a “full-blown humanitarian crisis” in Gaza.

Speaking on the 11th day of the Israeli assault, a senior ICRC official, Pierre Kraehenbuhl, said life in Gaza had become intolerable.

It is clear to me now that Israel is playing by George Bush rules. Bomb the shit out of everything and never allow for the possibility that you might be wrong.

This gives countries the ability to do anything you want without concern for consequences.

  1. Delaware Dem says:

You all think it is bad now, just wait until Netanyahu wins the Prime Ministership, which he will.

  2. h. says:

Man, you think they would have cancelled classes. Especially with militants occupying it.

  3. June says:

h., what else would Israel say to justify what they did? I’ll believe that when I read from another source than Israel that militants were in the school with the children.

  4. Perry says:

A real tragedy here, emerging in front of the eyes and ears of the globe.

The timing of Israeli aggression appears to be before violence addict and Israeli supporter Bush leaves office.

I expect Obama to be tougher on them, using the $3B + per year as leverage, behind the scenes, and tough on Hamas as well, with what leverage I’m not sure.

Like it or not, Hamas has to be part of the solution, since they will not ever be annihilated no matter what the Israelis do.

  5. meatball says:

Perry, its more like $6billion+, lifetime $14,000 per Israeli.

  6. anon says:

Obama could be tougher on the EU, UN, and Arab powers as well.

For a ceasefire, all Israel is asking for is a stop to the rockets, and international guarantees that Hamas will not rearm.

    Is that so hard?

  7. liz says:

anon. its called self defense. This from a jewish woman in my group.

“Jews across Europe tried to organize resistance against the nazis, smuggling homemade weapons to fight back. Between 41 &43 undergroud movements in more than 100 Jewish groups did this.

The most famous attempt by Jews to resist the Nazis occured in what is now the famous “Warsaw Ghetto”.

For 60 years Palestinans have been doing the same thing. Gaza is the worlds largest concentration camp. Starved, trapped and being killed like fish is a bowl”. Another Jew for Peace.

Are you saying that Gazans have “no right to a defense against the worlds 3rd largest military”?

At the UN School where the women and children fled was protected by 2 men with guns…they were killed but so were the women and children they were protecting inside.

Article 33….Geneva Conventions/International Law…Schools, hospitals, churches (mosques) et are off limits. The zionists have the most high tech equipment in the world…they are TARGETING WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

I hope Jason/Geek will post the latest video I sent them. Holding information back will not educate anyone, but permit those without information to cling to their uninformed opinion.

  8. liz says:

    h. you are a fool. They werent IN school, there is no school in Gaza! They took women/children there to protect them from the constant barrage of chemical bombs, phosperous my friend. Outlawed by the UN, but used against the Lebanese two years ago, and used by the US against Falejuah and the Iraqis.

  9. liz says:

Hamas has agreed to end their homemade bomb self defense if Israel stops the bombing and opens the borders to humanitarian relief.

Sarkozsy offered the deal to Ohlmert today….no deal for Ohlmert…we are not finished.

  10. liz says:

June: the two gunmen were outside in the courtyard….not inside! They were protecting those inside.

  11. anon says:

At the UN School where the women and children fled was protected by 2 men with guns…they were killed but so were the women and children they were protecting inside.

That is why the use of human shields is illegal.

And… phosporus is NOT outlawed by the UN; it is explicitly permitted to generate smoke cover… which is apparently what Israeli troops are doing. Israeli commanders are well aware that if they fire phosphorus into a crowd they will get a trip to the Hague.

If you have any evidence of a broad chemical attack, put it up.

You don’t have to ask the hosts to post a video, you can just post the link right here. And please don’t waste our time with more videos that don’t contain the facts you are claiming. I can find them on the Internet myself.

  12. anon says:

Hamas has agreed to end their homemade bomb self defense if Israel stops the bombing and opens the borders to humanitarian relief.

Hamas does not have credibility to make a pledge to stop firing rockets. What Israel is demanding is international border supervision to prevent new weapons from coming into Gaza. Nobody has offered that yet. It is the key.

  13. delacrat says:

Let’s keep new weapons out of ISRAELI hands.

  14. I agree with this logic. If you don’t kill the women and children how do you keep the terrorists from reconstituting?

    it’s brilliant

  15. jen says:

I do believe that h. was being satiric and ironic. I do believe that he very well knows that the children were not in school. He was responding to the excuses made by Israel.

Lighten up Lizzie. You are not the only one appalled by this Israeli clusterfuck.

  16. MJ says:

No Bibi for PM. You should ask your friends in Israel (if you have any) to vote Hadash.

  17. h. says:

    Finally, someone gets my satire.

Liz must be a terrorist. Why don’t you go to Gaza and join the cause?
