The repubs tell me that you can live a pretty darn good life in Cuba for free! Uncle Sam pays for it all. They even have a sport called “water boarding.”
And in 2000, Clinton signed The Trade Sanctions Reform and Export Enhancement Act, which opened a bit of the sanctions curtain to let Cuba buy US agricultural products and some medical supplies. They had to pay cash for it first, but they could buy them. Now, Cuba uses their small cash reserves to buy almost $800 million of food from us.
Now — think about this: who has more political clout — the Florida Cuban minority (which probably didn’t vote for Obama anyway) or the many legislators from farm states trying to cultivate more business?
One Senate race versus 50 or 60 legislators from farm states?
Please.
Or better — a few people from Florida who are holding a grudge versus a nation of people who want to sell Cubans stuff? We’re Americans up in here, and sooner or later the money talks.
George McGovern, Carter and many others have been trying to get all these embargos lifted as our embargo is an embarassment. While many countries are trading there, or go there for health care (especially from S. America), its time to end this ole cold war mentality and open up both trade and tourism. I have Doctor friends who visited there and they say their health care system is far better than ours. I believe in the rating system the US is actually behind Cuba and Costra Rica.
Cuba doesnt have an aids problem because they placed their cases in a “group of apts with nurses and doctors” so the disease didnt go public. My Doctor friend said they have clinics in every little neighborhood even in the mountains. They don’t have the best equipment due to the embargo, but they have many fine doctors who actually cured some skin disease typical in tropical countries.
Its time to open all trade and tourism they are only 90 miles off our coast. Its stupid to continue this hatred. Also the people are very educated on current events as in their factories the newspapers from around the world are read over PA systems. The buildings are in need of repair and paint etc, because the US has kept them a third class country.
Hankerin’ for a stogie, while sippin’ some ‘buie, are ya’?
Hankerin’ for JUSTICE!!!
As usual.
justice in the form of a stogie!
Prediction: Once Castro goes, the place will open up within a decade and become a giant beach-front resort, owned by the major hotel chains.
Amen…bitch!
So long as Barry is worried about winning Florida in 2012 he won’t do shit.
If your a seller of parts for 55 buicks your in the money
I don’t think the Cuban ex-pats hold as much power as they used to in Florida.
Agreed, UI. We have friends in Miami and the next generation is more interested in traveling to Cuba than bans and embargoes.

The embargo isn’t something that can be lifted by executive order; you’d need an act of Congress to change it.
Remember our last Democratic president? In early 1996, he signed the Helms-Burton Act, which tightened the embargo, into law.
Tom S is correct, we will see politics override princples on this and many other areas.
The cuban vote (almost 4%) is too important.
We will hear some dribble about Castro’s legacy being a failure and ‘possible’ openings under new leadership.

Easy, the Cuban minority.
The problem does not rest with Obama’s election prospects, the Senate race is the focus.

Sticking with my original point – the times they are a changing. Young Cubans are different than the old guard. The embargo and bans will disappear.
Hey folks they live longer than us
