   So it seems there is this concerted effort on the right to prove that torture is teh awesome! (contrary to the facts and contrary to every treaty on the subject that we’ve ever signed).

   Most observers say it is a pretty transparent attempt to frame the Bush use of torture as heroic so that it will be more difficult to prosecute our torture approvers. (…as if Democrats would ever have the guts to prosecute any Republican for anything.)

   Anyway, since this the GOP talking point of the week I expect our local wingnuts will all have boners for how great torture is.

   So, if another country tortures our citizens because the really, really, really feel like they’re doing the right thing will we forgive them?

   I’m a little bemused by the torture apologists who pretend that the Geneva Convention was written by a bunch of hippies. The Geneva Conventions were written by people who had just come through WWII and they wanted to prevent the things they saw from happening again. Have we forgotten this?

   Anyway, 9/11 could have been prevented by actual police work. 9/11 could have been prevented if the FBI was not ignored by the Secretary of Defense. 9/11 could have been prevented by Bush doing his job.

    So what if whomever it was that gave Khalid Sheik Mohammed a swirlie is prosecuted for it, convicted, and then given a pardon? That way the message is sent that rules are rules, and you’d better have a damn good reason for breaking them. Also, by issuing the pardon, the “decider” assumes full personal responsibility.

    TT, STFU. Clinton is on tape saying he was offered Bin Laden on a silver platter, but couldn’t find a legal justification for it. That’s what happens when you treat terrorism as a law enforcement issue. Oh wait, but rendition of terror suspects to countries which practice torture openly was perfectly legit.

    The “Clinton didn’t take bin Laden” is a persistent wingnut myth (one of those zombie lies that just won’t die). One thing I read is that Bush refused to take out Zarqawi before the Iraq War, even though we knew where he was, because Bush was using Zarqawi as a justification for the Iraq War.

    Like everything, conservatives fall back on the only thing they have to get people on their side, be it torture or elections: Make the issue all about emotion (read: no practical ideas).
