Republicanism, Alabama Style

Filed in National by on January 26, 2009

Here is a name from the not-so-recent past, Judge Roy Moore and he is thinking about running for governor of Alabama, reports countrycat in Left in Alabama.

Moore?  You might remember him as the Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court and the battle over the Ten Commandments Memorial in the Alabama state courthouse. There were press reports and  a court case which ended up with a U.S. federal judge telling Moore to remove the religious memorial (pdf). He refused to do so and was subsequently removed from the bench by the Alabama Court of the Judiciary. The memorial was removed as well.

Moore ran for governonr in Alabama in 2006 and lost in the primary to the incumbent, Gov. Bill Riley. Besides Moore being the current chairman of the Foundation for Moral Law, he is also a poet and not a very good one at that.

In the poem The Faded Black Book an old weary man is walking down a street until two hooligans beat him down and robbed him but only to find a faded black book.

“That little black book,” the old man said,
“It may be faded and old.
But the things you will find written within,
Are worth more than silver and gold.”

The thugs berate the old man and his “book”, only for the old man to warn his attackers of a band of thieves that lie await ahead. The old man offers to show his two attackers a different way.

“Well, old man,” said one of the youths,
“I’ve never really thought of things so.
And if you don’t mind we will go your way,
Perhaps more of this book we should know.”

Arrghh! Is this what the Republican Party has to offer in response to overwhelming defeat in November, bad poetry and a religious zealot whose claim to fame is defying the US Constitution.

Wouldn’t the Alabama Republican Party be better off with this guy who was recently arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated because he was rushing across town to get a blow job?

I certainly remember the controversy over the statue very well. IIRC, the monument weighed 10 tons and was placed in the middle of the night. One thing that really struck me was when it was about to be removed, pictures kept appearing with people kneeling, praying, etc. in front of the monument and their overwrought responses to the prospect of its removal. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t there something in the 10 commandments about worshipping idols?

As far as the argument that the 10 commandments are the basis of our laws, I call B.S. on that one. The 10 commandments can’t be the basis for our laws – most of the 10 commandments aren’t actually illegal, only killing (in some circumstances) and stealing are actually illegal. Coveting, honoring your parents and worship days are not in our laws at all.

The GOP is in a fog because their policies have actually been tried and have failed utterly.

There are those, like Charlie Copeland and Mike Protack who think that they just need to kick back for a while and let the Democrats get unpopular, and there are those who think that they need more Jesus.

In the end Americans win as long as these two schools of thought are the vying for the soul of the party.

Coveting other peoples stuff is the American way 🙂

  4. Unstable Isotope says:

You’re so right Mark. “Keeping up with the Joneses” has been the basis of our economy for 30 years.

What kills me is when these wing-nuts start speaking out about the “Judeo-Christian heritage.” Hmmm, if I remember my history correctly, it seems as though some Christians forced some Jews to convert or be put to death. Yeah, that’s a heritage I would be proud to boast of.

  6. Your criticism of Republican Judge Moore is a personal opinion.

However, is the Governor of Illinois a Democrat? Gov Blagoyevich is his name. Please defend him. I don’t think you could print Blago’s poems, too many f’s in them.

No one with this effort of rebuilding the GOP in Delaware thinks waiting for the dems to fail will work, yes the Dems will fail but that fact will not be enough to win.

I am so tired of Protack’s childish stupidity. Pick a comment, any comment, and you’ll find him spamming the same thing. No one here has ever defended Blagoyevich – in fact, there were several calls for his impeachment.

Honestly, Mike, dealing with you is like dealing with a child who immediately points out his siblings wrong-doings to defend his own bad behavior. Parents don’t buy this nonsense from their children, and I’m not buying it from you.

OMFG, this is a blog — it’s all about personal opinion. Instead of trying to rebuild the Delaware Republican Party, why don’t you start with Legos during playtime, because it’s evident you’ve chewed off more than you can swallow.

RtDeGOP wrote However, is the Governor of Illinois a Democrat? Gov Blagoyevich is his name.

No one here has defended Blago, so STFU.

So, newly-elected DEMOCRAT Portland Mayor Sam Adams had a sexual relationship with a teenager.
    .
So, Sam Adams had a sexual relationship with a teenager.

That probably won’t make any difference to the idiots that voted for him. After all, as he takes his rightful place as the chief hedonist of Sodom-on-the-Willamette, that sort of thing is just par for his particular course.

Adams is a coward, both politically and morally. He’s not, finally, admitting to his perversion because it’s the right thing to do; no, that’s simply not possible. Instead, he’s fessin’ up because the Willamette Weekly has nailed him.

Had Mr. Adams been possessed of character, he would have told the truth before the election. But like most democrats striving to reach the bar lowered by Bill Clinton, that must depend on what your definition of “is,” is.

Mr. Adams must resign. Lying by omission, even if not technically illegal, provides him with no excuse.

  13. RSmitty says:

Oh yay. Trying to show moral repugnancy of this guy vs what? Our party, Mike? This may be close to one of the worst argument to even attempt as a political argument. If you despise it, which I think you do, then despise it. Don’t pretend the GOP is so high and mighty when our house is equally dirty (if not more). Keep it as an individual’s immorality, not a party’s.

BTW, I didn’t read the article, but is said-teenager a minor? Makes a HUGE legal difference.

  14. Here is the sad truth, you folks throw childish rants and inflammatory statements yet when you get challenged you can’t defend yourselves.

For every republican you castigate there are democrats who have done the same and worse.
When those flawed Dem folks are pointed out you cry foul.

You make these sort of childish rants because in the end you have no policies or principles to make the nation or state better. I have pointed out the GOP falls short in many ways but the process to rebuild is under way.

When Unemployment goes over 9%, the budget comes up short by a trillion $ and we get attacked what will you say then? We all know what you will say-it is Bush’s fault. That plea will not work.

When you are in command you are responsible for every thing that happens or fails to happen under your command. Obama needs to understand that fact and so do all of you.

Dumb-ass Republican wrote When Unemployment goes over 9%, the budget comes up short by a trillion $ and we get attacked what will you say then? We all know what you will say-it is Bush’s fault. That plea will not work.

Mike, unemployment is going to go over 9%. The budget is going to be in huge shortfalls. And yes, the is Bush’s fault.

  16. RSmitty says:

C’mon Mike. When there is nothing positive to spin, trash the opponent? That’ll win ’em over, for sure.
    :roll eyes:
(ok, how do you do that emoticon?)

  17. Unstable Isotope says:

Unlike Republicans, I don’t believe the behavior of one individual reflects on every other individual of the same party. Wingnuts have some kind of fetish of trying to pretend that one extreme statement by a Democrat = beliefs of the whole party (nutpicking).

    Republicans believe in IOKIYAR.

    Look at recent sex scandals:
    Spitzer – resigned
    Edwards – persona non grata
Vitter – leader of Republicans in the Senate
    Stevens – standing ovation

  18. Von Cracker says:

    Benny Hinn for President!

Extra bonus for not being a White too!

The GOP is soooooo much like REAL America!

    LOL!

  19. X Stryker says:

Apparently Protack doesn’t actually read this blog, or he’d know we’re not afraid to attack Democrats (or in the case of John Atkins, people who call themselves “Democrats” for political reasons).

Protack, do you expect us to defend this Portland sleaze? Do you expect us to run him as a candidate for Governor, the way constitution-basher Roy Moore is? Do you expect us to cheer him the way Republican bloggers cheer the obstructionism of David “the Shitter” Vitter?

He does. And why would he expect such things? Because Protack is a Republican, and thus he expects we’ll act like Republicans.

And that’s why the GOP doesn’t get it.

  20. MJ says:

Protack, Blago called and want’s his hair back that you’ve been wearing on your upper lip.

Oh, and while you’re at it, call Alex Trebek for a clue.
