Today’s Markell/Denn Inaugural Event

This has been a great Inaugural Week so far, with the midnight swearing in (links goes to video of that event) of Governor Jack Markell and Lt. Governor Matt Denn Tuesday morning and the awe-inspiring Presidential swearing in events yesterday.

Today, Jack and Matt get to Part 2 of their Inauguration Ceremonies today, which includes the complete Inaugural addresses of both Jack and Matt. If you aren’t going to be there in person, this will be webcast (audio and video) from the State’s website. Alternately, WDEL will also be broadcasting much of today’s event live.

If you are going or if you are already there, or just listening in from your desk, feel free to drop your observations about the event here in the comments.

Lobbyists Are People Too

If it wasn’t obvious to you before that Harry Reid, whose ancestor may have been horse thief and a train robber, was going to be a problem for President Obama, no matter, Harry is here to remind us. Firedoglake points us to an ABC News report that informs us that  Reid invited top lobbyists to an inaugural brunch on Monday. Said Reid:

People should understand that lobbyists, per se, are someone’s father, mother, son, daughter. They work for a living.

Dance

All throughout the convention, the election and the transition, and to last night, I have felt really happy for Joe Biden. This is a man who has always wanted to lead his party and country. So seeing him give those acceptance speeches, seeing him campaign as the nominee, seeing him raise his right hand yesterday and swear an oath to defend the Constitution, and seeing him dance last night with his wife was bittersweet. Yeah, he wanted to be the #1, but such is life. He knows that and is livin it up anyway, enjoying every minute of this journey.

A New Era of Politics.

Ken Burns, the noted documentarian and historian, said Barack Obama’s inaugural speech today marks the beginning of America’s Third Act, with him describing the First Act extending from our founding to Lincoln and the end of slavery, and the Second Act extending from there to now, overseeing the fulfilling of America’s promise to all its citizens, regardless of race. And now the Third Act begins.

Indeed, President Obama’s speech did, to me, seem to mark an end to the politics of the last 30 years. When he said that the question was not of whether the government was too big or too small, it is a question of whether the government works, I let out a cheer. This has been my view for years. I never bought into the false choice presented us, that of a choice between a bloated welfare state and that of a libertarian minimalist federal government that only provided for our national defense. I believe our federal government can serve the people and be efficient, and the President has now echoed that belief, and ended, in my view, the dominant frame of the Conservative Era over the last 30 years. In ending that frame, he ended their era. It is now the Obama Era. The Era of the Practical. The Era of Pragmatism.

In the Conservative Era from 1980 until 2008, Republicans railed against big government and for small government. In the Obama Era that begins tonight, Progressives and liberals will rail against inefficient government that does not provide for the people. This is a devastating frame for the opposition. How do oppose efficiency? You can’t. It forces the opposition to oppose the efficient programs being funded on their merits. And that is just fine. It long past time that we have an honest debate about providing healthcare and social security to our citizens based on the idea of it alone. And if you oppose that idea, good. Let’s debate it, finally, and honestly.

Before, Republicans could hide their opposition to social programs by railing against spending. They would say “Gee, it sounds like a good idea but we can’t afford it.” Well, if spending is being cut elsewhere through the elimination of programs and departments unneeded or that have failed in their original task, that excuse loses water. Republicans will be forced to oppose the merits of the program. Or they can argue they have a more efficient way.

Efficiency is the new frame. Efficient government is the new goal. Not a smaller government. Not a bigger government. A government that provides for our common defense, and our common health, and our common security.

The Obama Era begins. At long last.

Obama’s Inauguration Address

What a speech (full transcript here).  It lived up to, and surpassed, my expectations.  The bar keeps being raised and Obama keeps getting better.

As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience’s sake.

And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more. Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

It’s simply worth another read.

QOD

Are we now going to be a communist country?

2nd QOD:

Where do we turn in our guns since we aren’t allowed to own them anymore?

Breaking: Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd Having Medical Issues at the Inauguration

This is still developing.  Kennedy was taken from the luncheon on a stretcher.  No word on his status.  Byrd was also having issues and was taken from the luncheon.

Update:  Apparently, Kennedy suffered a seizure (or several) and was taken fom the room.  Robert Byrd was apparently disturbed by the Kennedy events and left the room as a result.  Hopefully all is well.

Time To Get To Work

Both Governor Markell and President Obama have made service a key to their plans.  As you may know, DelawareLiberal is making a point to help out how we can by organizing a morning at the Food Bank in Newark on Saturday.  The Food Bank has added staff for our visit so we now have a few spots open.

So if you are looking for a way to help out on Saturday from 9AM to noon, send an email to liberalgeek at delawareliberal.net and let me know.  If you are already signed up for the food bank, you will need to print out this form before you get there (actually, we will have forms there, but this will save time).  Make sure that you dress relatively warm, as the last time I was there it was a little chilly there.

We expect Jack Markell to be there to help out and you can be assured that we will be making him work. 🙂

In the evening, we will be celebrating, so please check you schedule and come celebrate with us.  We are up to 65 people and I’m hoping for 75.  Remember, the proceeds benefit Autism Delaware.
