We use them where it doesn’t matter so much. Garage, basement, bathrooms… behind a frosted glass cover I really can’t tell the difference in the light.
One good thing is the CFLs are brighter for the same wattage, so you can put in 100-watt equivalent CFL in a fixture that would quickly burn up with a 100-watt incandescent. As I get older and my eyes need more light I appreciate that.
For some of our fixtures we used to limit the wattage or even leave some of the multi-bulb sockets empty because the heat would quickly burn out the bulbs. But with CFL we can use a bright bulb in every socket with no heat problems.
We still use incandescents in our table lamps though.
I’m with Jay. I think CFLs are a bridging technology until we all go to LEDs. There are now white light LEDs, and I think it just a matter of time until they displace most lightbulbs.
It took me a while to get use to the cold white color. Shop around, there are CF bulbs on the market now that have warmer tone. Just today, I bought some DIMMABLE compact flourescent bulbs at Ollie’s in Dover for $3.99 for two. I also use some LED bulbs, and they also vary in color warmth.
If you don’t use them the earth will die. Unless, of course, you contact the investment firm I started with the former CEO of Goldman Sachs and buy some shares to cleanse yourself.
I’m not crazy about the light color, either and have kept a few of the regular bulbs in places where I read. But both Karmicjay and UI are right to recommend LED bulbs.
OTOH — I did see what was billed as Warm Light CFLs for sale at BJs. Par for their course, you had to buy a pretty big package of them.

BJs sucks the big one (yes, I’m a member). Whatever they suggest, do the opposite. Another word of advice, whatever life expectancy they say a CF bulb will have, reduce it by 50%. I’ve been using these fuckers since they hit the market, and none have lived up to their promises.
Why do you hate American Environmentalists? Better yet, Global Environmentalists? You earth-hater, you.
Dude…save me from SPAM (again) and why the freak am I going there?!?!
EDIT: Gee, this one showed up. Stupid spam filter.

How about LEDs? Longer lasting and no mercury?
I still have to use up the CFLs we have at home though.

Evolve, boy.

what sucks even more is they don’t work in dimmers at all.

Just doing my part to thwart global warming.

See post #6, Dickweed.
Just another example on how Jason330 is becoming a Republican.
Hating America is next for Jason330.
Just spend a little more and get daylight or sunlight versions of them.
