Dominatrix Work Forces Recession to Its Knees

Filed in National by on February 16, 2009

I really, really wish I had made up that title, but it comes from this article over at CNBC. And they got it from the Kinkonomics blog over at The Daily Beast. (Kinkonomics article may be NSFW) Definitely read the Kinkonomics blog post, but this is how CNBC describes it:

When the going gets tough, the tough get out their whips.

Are you listening to me?

(Whapisssh!)

One of the kinkier trends to emerge from this recession is that many professional women are turning to dominatrix work to supplement their incomes, Tracy Quan reports in her blog post called “Kinkonomics” over at the Daily Beast.

Quan interviews some of the women who’ve turned to fetish work, including “Linda,” who works as a editor by day and a dominatrix at night.

So — apparently there are some actual recession-proof (and not — ahem –stimulus qualified) opportunities out there at 80 – 200 dollars per hour! Who knew!

Why is this posted here? Well, we’ve been taking a look at some of the details of the meltdown and thought that DL readers would be very interested in a growth industry that keeps its clients firmly in hand.

    LOL! That’s so funny. I can’t believe it! Did you say $80 – $200 an hour? Hmmm…

  2. Unstable Isotope says:

Hmmm…I must be in the wrong line of work.

  3. pandora says:

That’s what dawned on me after I stopped mocking.

I don’t know whether this is true or not, but it sort of sounds like a fantasy to me. It fits just a bit too closely to the stereotype (in movies, books, etc.) that women are just castrating bitches.

    THAT’S MADAM…YES MADAM..SPEAK CLEARLY WHEN I

    Oops…

    From #4
…that professional women are just castrating bitches.

I would expect that Tracy Quan’s article is real — she used to cover this kind of stuff when she wrote for Salon. And professional women as castrating bitches seems to be what their clients seem to be lining up for, yes?

And Joanne — I’m thinking you just might be a natural…..

  9. Joanne Christian says:

    Natural….Professional…whatever…the bills get paid.

We should never forget the last minutes of the late Nelson Rockefeller. Perhaps if so much time was not needed to remove the ‘love accessories’ he might have gotten medical treatment earlier. He did have his kinky moments but did leave something for his mistress.

Poor Bill Clinton was treated as the Caligula of the Ozarks but he never came down to the standards of LBJ, JFK, or Warren G. Harding.

This should have gotten more tabloid coverage and was a bit wilder than that incident involving a blue dress.

  11. Art Downs says:

This may not be the best way to whip the economy into shape.

For a real nightmare, consider a client who has paid for a session of ‘discipline’ discovering that his dominatrix is a former Governor of Delaware.

Would it be too much to ask for the nurse’s uniform and a name tag saying “Ms. Ratchett”? Don’t forget the jaw-dams so no teeth crack during electrification.

  14. anon says:

If I had a daughter who was considering the sex trade as a career, I’d counsel her to think about dominatrix work.

  15. Joanne Christian says:

anon-“counseling” a daughter that late in the game of life….well that’s just inspirational. Any more parenting tips?

  16. Reis says:

Maybe anon could give some advice on drinking and driving, like carrying breath mints and Visine.

  17. anon says:

I have to say I was worried when she expressed interest in going to the sex trade magnate school in our area (Caesar Rodney HS).

But they have a high graduation rate.
