Delaware Liberal

Around the Horn Friday

Another week, another Delaware Blogosphere “crisis.” This time, Mike Matthews proclaims boldly that he is done with Delaware Liberal because I guess we were too critical of him, or mean. Oh the irony. He’ll be back. We are like the mob. Just when you thought you were out, we will pull you back in. Meanwhile, in an interesting turnaround from the events of last week, “John Feroce” and “FSP” are back commenting here… alot. See Matthews, it is impossible to resist us.

Now onto serious, or at least, non-meta posts from around the Delaware Blogosphere:

Dana Garrett reports that states may stop executions to cut costs. That is an interesting side affect of the Great Depression II. Who knew that killing people cost more money than jailing them?

• Dana also discusses Governor Markell’s “Green is Gold” plan, and is somewhat critical:

But I am not sure I want a visionary heading up DNREC as much as I want a watchdog, a particularly tenacious and vigilant one. I want someone who focuses on cleaning up Delaware and keeping it safe, not someone also focused on growing its economy. I worry that a “green is gold” Secretary could find a conflict of roles between regulating polluters and looking out for Delaware’s bottom line.

I want both a watchdog on the old industries and a visionary for the new industries. I guess I am trusting that we can walk and chew gum at the same time.

• Redwater Lily gives us a recipe for homemade Artisan bread.

• Nancy Willing reports on DLC Tom Carper just missing being listed as one of the Senate’s Top 10 recipients of lobbyist and PAC money in 2006. He finished 11th. Darn. Better luck in 2012.

Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) $164,490 Individuals, $48,193 Lobbyists, $212,683 PACs

• Nancy also thinks there could be nepotism at work in Governor Markell’s new energy policy. I’ll let her try to connect the dots.

Yesterday, as Tommywonk honked for UD’s Willett Kempton’s V2G and electric cars, Markell held a presser about his collaboration with a Rehoboth Beach-based, think tank, the Climate Prosperity Project, [which is] linked to Global Urban Development and today announced a grant to AutoPort, Inc. to outfit car engines with the capacity to run on electricity. [Of note: GUD’s Climate Prosperity Project’s Executive Board includes Willett Kempton’s significant other, Stephanie McClellan, [who is also Governor Markell’s] Policy Director[.]

Nancy goes onto to question McClellan’s environmental credentials and calls her a talented bootstrapper, but I am wondering, what is the scandal here again? Electric cars are good, no? I guess I don’t see conspiracies everywhere.

• Tommywonk, as linked in Nancy’s post above, has a lot on Governor Markell’s Climate Prosperity Strategy for Delaware: Here, and Here, and Here.

• Shirley comments on Delaware’s Big Fat Losers. I sense a reality show coming. Mike Matthews was made for reality TV. We could even do a mashup of sorts of reality shows: Biggest Losers and the Bachlorette, with Christine O’Donnell. Well, while we wait for the TV show, here is the website.

• Mike Matthews liveblogged the Red Clay School District Meeting. Hilarity ensues.

• Kilroy keeps the focus on Red Clay the majority of the week as well.

• Brian Shields has a call to action about supporting our local business.

• There is nothing of local interest at Colussus of Rhodey this week. And Matthews complains that we are shrill and insulting here. Has he ever read Hube? You see, that is why I roll my eyes whenever Matthews acts self righteous about our temperment over here. Please, look at what we have to deal with?

• Same thing for Dana at Common Sense Political Thought. Not about shrillness, but about local content. But I will link to him because his site looks nice now.

• And same thing for the other Del Lib gang. Their only local content is ragging on us. I only point out that Del Libertarian, Hube and Dana don’t have local content so that I don’t get accused of … wait for it… Bias!. LOL. Oh hell yeah I am biased, but in the Around the Horn, I do include the radical right, IF they write about local issues. You don’t have to write about Delaware, but if you don’t, then no linky.

• Ah Ha! Burris actually asks a great question of Progressive Representative John Kowalko, and I want an answer to that question. I do think the only state issue we liberals and conservatives can agree on is Open Government. He also expresses his own concern over Markell’s Green is Gold program.

• And he alleges that donors to Dr./Senator Michael Katz funded negative ads against Son of Clatworthy (ah, I miss him). My reaction is meh. Didn’t Bush Donors fund the Swiftboat Liars without any complaint from Burris? Yes.

• Finally, in case you missed it earlier this week, here is John Feroce discussing the latest obsession of radical cleric Glen Beck, and Liberal Geek’s geeky takedown.
