Brian Shields Weighs In.
A tip received from our friend Brian Shields:
I just weighed in, and I lost some weight. I put out a bet on the success of next week’s weight loss.
….
All the details are in the post, along with the promise that if I don’t lose 5 pounds next week, I go shopping for Food Bank donations in a baby bonnet and a pacifier. All bets go to the Food Bank of Delaware.
Please visit Delaware’s Biggest Losers and take Brian up on his bet. It is for a great cause. Congrats Brian on your success so far and keep it up.
Thanks! 6 and a half pounds this week. WOOT!
It’s gonna suck on Wednesday when I am in Philly, and the whole family is going to Pat’s to get a cheesesteak. Not sure if I am going to give in to the temptation or not…
Keep up the good work Brian!!!!!
If you avoid the Wiz, and just get Provolone, one little sandwich is alright.
Remember that the first week is the easiest, especially for guys.

What, do you have a bet down against the guy or something?
I agree anon. Brian, if you want to wear a baby bonnet and suck on a pacifier, by all means, have the sandwich. Otherwise, suffer the slings and arrows and enjoy the satisfaction on the ride home.
Go for the salad, Brian, and then beg for a bite of someone else’s cheesesteak! Also, 5lbs a week seems a little high for a goal – stay realistic! And don’t deny yourself a treat, now and then. If you don’t reward yourself every once in a while, you’re more likely to quit the diet.
Pat’s or Gino’s has salads?
Just checked out their menu. No salads. Hmm… anyone in your group willing to split a cheesesteak with you?
Good job Brian!
Nonstop deprivation undermines any effort here, so if you really want the sandwich, have the sandwich. Just don’t have ALL of the sandwich. decide in advance to have 1/4 to 1/2 of it (depending upon how big the whole thing is) and stick to your portion control decision. Take apple slices to substitute for fries or chips on the side — and plan to fill up on those, rather than the rest of the sandwich.
Good luck. I’m working on South Beach and ramping up walking miles to walk another marathon this spring.
5lbs a week seems a little high for a goal
5lbs/wk was the best I could do with 1000 calories and running 5 miles per day. I couldn’t keep it up long, but at that rate you don’t have to.
5 pounds is high. Especially for the second week. I never expected half the loss I had this week. This is the week most diets fail.
I picked a high number to generate interest, and motivate me. That baby bonnet is going to be in my head all week now, when I don’t want to ride the extra 5 minutes on the bike in the gym, when I want to hit Dairy Queen’s drive thru, when a crew pizza is made at work…
Bet for me making it, bet that I set my goals too high.. I have no idea what will happen next Saturday when I step on that scale.
Wednesday is also a no gym day, because of the day trip.
Yes, normal weight loss is around 2 lbs./week. I agree, if you deprive yourself of everything you like you’re in for a miserable time. So, have your sandwich and keep up the good work!
Don’t order in Spanish. They get yelly.
That’s going out to you ElSom
congratulations!! Don’t forget that you will lose a lot the first weeks because of water loss. A realistic goal per week is actually about 2 to 2.5 lbs. after the first few weeks.
