Legalizing Marijuana More Popular Than Republicans
And, apparently, more popular than than Republican policies, too — Chris Bowers does the work (see Open Left for links to where the polling comes from):
It should also be noted that, at 40-41% (ed. note: Rasmussen and CBS polls respectively) support, legalizing marijuana is more popular than all of the following:
* Opposing stricter gun control laws (40%)
* Congress (26-40%)
* The war in Iraq (39%)
* Decreasing immigration levels (39%)
* Privatizing Social Security (36%)
* Opposing investigating the Bush administration (34%)
* Opposing national, government run health insurance (32%)
* Vetoing stem cell research (31%)
* The Republican Party (31%)
* Dick Cheney (30%)
* George W. Bush (24-34%)
* Decreasing business regulations (28%)
* Rush Limbaugh (28%)
* Mitch McConnell (22%)
* Preventing the openly gay from serving in the military (17%)
* John Boehner (17%)In short, legalizing marijuana is more popular than the Republican Party, most leading Republicans, and virtually the entire Republican platform.
Matt Yglesias takes it one step further, to visualize this state of affairs:
Remember that legalizing pot still isn’t something that a majority of Americans support yet. But apparently still recognize the fringe when they see it…..

John Boehner is at 17% approval? Wow.
I bet he can get it to 12%.
This is good news…..we are making progress as a nation. YES!
It sure would make sense from a budget perspective. Legalize it and grant clemency or pardons for all those already convicted or in prison.
Legalizing marijuana makes more sense than Republicans right now, that’s for sure. Republicans apparently aren’t even satisfied with their own websites, since they have to come here to get any attention at all.
True, A1. Imagine how much we could save by imprisoning less people. Plus, I think we could legalize and tax the heck out of it.
Personally, I am against vice taxes unless all the money goes to drug education and treatment programs. I don’t think states should profit off of people’s misery or euphoria.
Legalize marijuana and the next thing you know boys will be going around with their shirttails untucked, and jazz musicians will be having sex with our women.
Don’t forget about the crazed Mexicans, who, according to the early 20th century christanists, bigots and Texans, are the only group of people on the entire globe that turns violent and gains a hankering for raping white wimmin while high on weed! That boogeyman was the reason pot was rolled into the Prohibition Act, in the first place! That and cotton lobby, of course.
Try another state or get a prescription for medicinal marijuana for athletes feet.
San Francisco Chronicle has an article on this. They say tax liquor, and decriminalize pot. If the leaders say they don’t want to decriminalize ask them to take a drug test….bettin half of them are tokin behind closed doors.
People would rather criminalize the GOP than weed.
Bush has taken us a long way in 8 years.
Yeah, but the poll didn’t include the long list of people that I wouldn’t piss on if they were on fire…Like Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein and Barry Soetoro.
BTW, I am 100% Pro marijuana legalization, before you start with all your conservative bashing… and I’m not a conservative.
a pot tax would erase the national debt in….. well days
