QOD
HYPOTHETICAL:
Let’s say you are unemployed (u/e) and your ex-spouse comes to you with a doctor bill asking you to pay half of the $225.00. Let’s then say that you the u/e person reply back saying, “Sorry, love to, I’m not sure if you know this but, I am u/e. I will pay you as soon as I get work. I have more pressing issues then this right now. I hope you can understand”
Then let’s say 1 week passes and you get a letter in the mail that says, “Sorry your u/e but I’m not letting that slide as an excuse. I want the half all $112.50 ASAP or else”
What do you do?
(in addition to your being u/e you have also paid for your daughters ADD medicines 3 times that cost $30 a pop, taken her to 2 “med check” appt’s and paid the $20 copay, paid for your other daughters allergy medicine for the past year without splitting the bill)
It depends on what is in you divorce settlement. If you’re on the hook because of your settlement you probably need to go back to court to get it renegotiated.
So my advice: find out what your legal obligation is for sure before you answer again. If you’re on the hook, you’ll have to pay and go to court I imagine. If you’re not on the hook you’ll have to put your foot down politely but firmly. If she wants to go to court to renegotiate, it will be her burden.
If I were u/e and faced with that….I would start clipping coupons, and present ex with $112.50 in coupons–but that’s just me.
I think the things you have done in the past won’t matter. In the future I wouldn’t offer any extra unless it was mandated.
I like the coupon idea. You could offer $112.50 worth in free babysitting.
You mean other than bring it up in the blog?
Hypothetical bitch.
If it’s for your spouse, she should be able to take care of herself.
If it’s for your children, a 50-50 split seems more than reasonable. But it’s unreasonable to expect immediate payment when you’re drawing unemployment.
Raise your youngest to be a lawyer. Odds are he’ll have a degree before the haggling is over.
I’d probably pay it fo rthe kids sake – if the bill is concerning a child you have together. However, I’d write the check to the doctor directly rather then her.
Of course, I am spekaing here as a custodial parent who has a dead beat ex that hasn’t paid a dime in years…
I wonder how many canadiens are going thru this . The answer is zero, The for profit health system that we use is so headed for a train wreak I can not ever pass up an opportunity to remind people, don`t let the politicians yield to the health care lobbiests and keep us saddled with yhis outdated albertross any longer.
Plead your case, in writing, to the doctor (or whomever handles his business for him/her).
If you can’t get it waived or reduced ask for time payments. I agree with Suzanne….all checks written to the doctor, not the X.
How old is your youngest daughter? Just asking so we can know when Madam X is going be off your case………………
ALBATROSS!
ALBATROSS!
Hey STI, nice to see you back.
Most pharmaceutical companies offer their medicines free or at a reduced cost if you have income that qualifies. If my ex were making me responsible for the meds, I’d be applying to the drug company instead of paying the insurance company $30 a pop. All they can say is no and they might say yes.
What in the hell is the “or else” part? If she really wrote that in the letter, she just threatened you and yuo have proof. If “or else” has to do with taking you to court, then, well, your income changed, which makes a whole lot of things change and she may not want to do that.
Hi nemski; anytime you want to see me jump on just mention health care, walmart or our Judas economy and I,ll be popping up.
Judas economy — that’s good!
walmart
Google and watch:
“Theperfectgift!.wmv”
It won’t pay your bill, but it will help you feel better.
Did somebody mention walmart, the founders of or judas economy, the first company to prove you could make out like a bandit if you devalue work, pay less and make more seemed so right, but opps they forgot that workers are also their customers so even they are seeing sales drop and their stock values go lower.
The term Judas economy is taken from a book written way back in 2002 that warned where we were headed because we were puting too high a value on capitol and too low a value on workers wages. Corporations were using their record profits to boost their stock price instead of sharing it with their workers, losing site of the fact that their workers were also their customers.
A good personal example of how the system works happened to me 2 years ago. I,m a full time investor always looking for the edge and it came across the wire that a major shipping company was offering a one time 15% special dividend if you bouht the stock and held it for two weeks. This eas a nobrainer, i bought 10g`s worth, the stock rose 20% in price and i made 3200 in 2 weeks. They were a shipper of chinese goods and were making a bundle, so why give it to a stranger like me instead of giving a special bonus to their workers? The answer is how CEO`s are paid, in stock as well as cash, so by making their stock rise on the special dividend they profited twice. This is true thru out the corporate world, while they are busy cutting pay and benefits to their workers dividend payouts soarded to record levels.
Now getting back to wal-mart, if you google the forbes list of the world`s 10 riches people you will find not one but three Walton children on the list. So the low pay and no benefits way of wal-mart is not just about low prices it`s about padding their stock price so the rich get much richer.
Now in a few seconds Mike Protact will be condeming me for starting class war, and ironicly he himself has been a victum of this very flawed system.
Tell her to go.. pound sand.
In the meantime, please accept this 10% payment for the next 10 installments until income improves.
Works for debts.. as long as you show intent to pay.
hmmm, not a bad idea. give her $5 a week in pennies
Nice rant, STI! Hmm… might be time for a Walmart is the root of all evil post. 😉
wal mart
Pandora;
It`s a fact that wal-mart has totally destroyed small town economys all over the world, except india were they were smart enough to ban them. It`s not just walmart itself it`s the copy cat way other retailers cut their wages in the name of compitition.
You are starting to hear more and more about the harmful effects of deflation on the economy, wal-mart creates artificial deflation were ever they go. An average fulltime wal-mart employee earns much less than the official government poverty line even after 10 years of service so they qualify for food stamps medicade and many other government programs that our tax money funds. Plus their employees do not earn enough disposable income to support the rest of our economy, and they have become the largest employer in the country. They are a economic nitemare so your root of all evil statement is not so far fetched. They have been the match that has started the fire that is consuming our free market economy.
