Civics: A Parent’s Responsibility

Filed in National by on March 4, 2009

It has always been unbelievable to me that there could be seniors in high school who do not have a basic understanding of the governmental institutions, about the duties and responsibilities of citizenship, about the roles of Congress and the President. Indeed, the lack of that knowledge is dangerous to the preservation of our Republic, for it leads to the erosion of awareness of our rights and eventually to the erosion of our very rights themselves.

You saw this in the aftermath of September 11th, where there was much clamor for the curtailment of our rights under the 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendments just so we could feel safe from the Terrorists.

I received a good education, both in school and at home. My parents and grandparents were always politically involved, to the point where my great-grandfather was a Mayor of Penns Grove, New Jersey and my father ran for County Commissioner of Cecil County three times. Political discussions and fights were the norm at our family dinner table, not the exception. So that is why it is unfathomable to me that there could be families out there that do not discuss current political events.

Since my parents instilled in me a love for our rights and institutions, I do believe it is a parental responsibility to instill a civic awareness in their children. To that end, Nemski found a great site put together by former Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor called OurCourts.org. Talk a look and share it with your children.

In the words of Alberto Gonzales, teach them about their SO CALLED right to privacy.

I wish I could admit to finding this site, but Justice O’Connor was on The Daily Show pimping this site.

Please do not denigrate airline pilots. I am sure heros such as Captain Sully of the “Miracle on the Hudson” are not too found of the fact that must be associated with the likes of Mike Protack simply because they share the same profession.

    😉

I can tellyou this, every sight of been on tonight has been a combat zone, there is some serious duking out on market watch. com. I think the republicans would rather see us crash compleatly than Obama be succesful, what a childish bunch of morons.

Is shoe throwing part of civics class?

If so, I will be starting lessons tomorrow with sneakers and snowmen.

In Iraq they actually built a statue to honor the guy who threw his shoe at Bush but the government has since removed it. The right to protest is one thing that should be taught in civics class, without that right that the founding fathers insisted we retain we myswell apoint a despot now and get it over with. So the shoe throwers tactics may seem out of order it was awfully hard to get Dubya`s attention thru normal channels.

  8. find the missing word in your first sentence:

It has always been unbelievable to me that there could be seniors in high school who do have (HINT IT”S RIGHT HERE) a basic understanding of the governmental institutions, about the duties and responsibilities of citizenship, about the roles of Congress and the President.

kind of the most important word in your post 🙂
