Comment Rescue: WDEL Interviews Nominee for DNREC Secretary

Filed in Delaware by on March 17, 2009

This is a heads up from Allan Loudell for an event many of us are vitally interested in:

I have to run off after 5 p.m. to cover County Executive Chris Coons’ budget-address at 6, but I’ve set-up our Frank Gerace to interview Collin O’Mara LIVE on our airwaves at @ 5:35 this afternoon.

Allan Loudell
WDEL Radio

Since this is a surprise choice and not many of us know Mr. O’Mara, this might be a good opportunity to hear from him first at WDEL. 5:35 is the time, folks!

EDIT: Tommywonk has more data.

  1. Can you imagine the (pardon the expression) culture shock when those Sussex County chicken farmers first take the measure of the Silicon Valley wunderkind?

  2. lulu says:

From what I heard on WDEL he sounded really awesome! He is a little young – 29? 30? – but who cares – what matters is if he can get things done. Sussex might have a few more slack jaws when they see him, or not, he is better looking than most! Go Collin, we want change!

  3. Far too few slack-jawed references on this blog. Thanks, Lulu!

I am more worried about his culture shock.

  5. Miscreant says:

    Bulo y lulu…
While your benevolent concern about us unwashed and barbarous denizens down here in Sussex is truly touching, I’m sure we can handle change, someone who speaks well, is educated, and looks good. After all, we survived the presidential election. Perhaps, this time, we’ll get some substance.

I hope he spends considerable time here and gives equal consideration to that polluted, corrupt, third world shithole north of the canal in which you reside.

  6. Miscreant says:

“Far too few slack-jawed references on this blog…”

True, but not surprising, because it’s manifest among the contributors on this blog.

  7. cassandra_m says:

Only following your lead, mis — you have to provide stuff people will actually get. OEDs are probably in short supply among your usual company.

  8. The big industrial polluters in NCC and the chicken farmers in Sussex have been the tails wagging the environmental dog in Delaware.

‘Bulo is looking forward to major changes in both counties. And, yes, the Beast Who Slumbers has relatives in Sussex. Doesn’t visit them too often, tho…

  9. cassandra_m says:

Back to the topic — there may indeed be culture shock, but those chicken farmers have a pretty high interest in cheaper and renewable energy ideas.

With any luck he’ll be making sure those farms are in compliance with environmental regs too.

  10. Miscreant says:

Culture shock? We endured Christophe Tulou, and gave you John Hughes (you’re welcome to keep him) . I hope this lamb is good at what he does because Secy. of DNREC can be a real hot seat.

Cassandra – I can tell you’re having a hard time keeping up so I guess the next thing you’ll imply is that Sussex is telling N.C. Co. what to do? I hope not because you never adequately defended that elitist, asinine statement the last time.

  11. cassandra_m says:

Mis, you need to be careful about accusing people of not keeping up — and apparently I was right about OEDs being in short supply in your neck of the woods. But up here, Sussex Countians stop trying to diagnose the ills of Wilmington does not equal Sussex is telling N.C. Co. what to do.

And if knowing the difference makes me an elitist, that works for me.

  12. pandora says:

    Cassandra, check your link. 🙂

  13. cassandra_m says:

    Hm. What’s wrong with it?

  14. pandora says:

I’m being taken to a page that says “You do not have permission to preview drafts.”

  15. Miscreant says:

“And if knowing the difference makes me an elitist, that works for me.”

As long as you’re comfortable with that small perceived gain… I’m happy for you.

Need some help with that link?

  16. cassandra_m says:

    Fixed, I think.

Completely OK with elitist. But then, I’m not part of the audience of Resentment Radio where that is apparently an Original Sin.

  17. Geezer says:

Funny to see Miscreant getting all defensive about his choice of residence again, just a couple of posts below the one about his slack-jawed neighbors banding together to fight the threat of gay newlyweds.

  18. Miscreant says:

“…his slack-jawed neighbors banding together to fight the threat of gay newlyweds.”

I know it comes with the territory here, but don’t be so quick to judge and stereotype, you old fart. The first week in April my wife and I will be spending 6 days on a road trip with our best friends, a lesbian couple who exchanged vows over 11 years ago.

  19. Political Observer says:

Is it just me or is it a remarkable insight into the humor of Jack Markell that he nominated a guy named Collin O’Mara on St. Patrick’s Day to head “green” initiatives? That’s funny.

I certainly hope folks like David Small and Patrick Emory are able to stick around to guide this guy through Delaware politics and areas of concern other than “going green economics”. Something about his comment on equating being an “outdoorsman” with walking around in state parks (that may not be there after budget cuts) and fishing is not going to give a lot of confidence to folks who want a well rounded Sec. of Natural Resources.

I can forgive the youth of our soon-to-be Secretary. I also think this pick shows us where Markell is headed and is a committment to his economic vision. BUT…I think this guy has no idea what he’s getting into. It’s not just the competing outside groups that are going to pull him every different direction. DNREC is frequently interally inconsistent in its decisions and positions.

Delaware has not had good luck with “come-here” DNREC heads. Toulou was a trainwreck. Toby Clark was ineffectual. Of course, we’ve not fared much better on that score with natives….Hmmm. Maybe it’s time to re-examine the mission of DNREC and perhaps split the baby?

  20. Miscreant says:

“I certainly hope folks like David Small and Patrick Emory are able to stick around to guide…”

Small will probably be content to be the perpetually second in command (rumor has it that Markell offered him the Secretary position first), but Emory should have been flushed with the Minner Administration. With the possible exception of some of the imported asshats who headed Air & Waste Management over the past few years, I can’t think of a more ineffectual Director than Emory.

Just my opinion. As always, I could be wrong, and frequently am…

  21. anon says:

Sussex farmers have generally been in compliance with the rules. Now, if you want more, tougher rules, you’ll have a manure-slinging fight on your hands, ’cause they won’t take shit from a 29-year-old New York twerp by way of California. That’s got nothing to do with slack-jawed yokels, but just the perspective of folks who’ve been around the block, and around, and around, and around.

Markell’s going to have to make some major powerful gesture really early on to make sure everyone knows that he’s 101 percent behind O’Mara, or else DNREC’S old guard will run roughshod over the kid. Canning some of the Minner department head holdovers would be a great first start.

  22. anon says:

Oh, and Cassandra – you never did provide a single example of Sussex Countians trying to diagnose NCCo’s ills.

  23. Geezer says:

My point, Miscreant, is that if you choose to live among the slack-jawed, don’t act shocked when people point out the basic fact that your area is dominated by them.

Take a look at the comments on that thread. Your Kent Co. neighbor Mr. Anderson is a good example of what we northerners are talking about. If the shoe doesn’t fit you, why are you always acting as if it does?

  24. Miscreant says:

“My point, Miscreant, is that if you choose to live among the slack-jawed, don’t act shocked when…”

Thank you, Geezer, but your “point” was transparent and obvious, so no further rationalization is required. And I’m not at all shocked. Generalizations are expected. Do carry on. As always, it’s amusing.

  25. Geezer says:

Sorry. The way you carry on, I’m not always sure you get it. You do live among the slack-jawed, after all — and, if I may be particular here, you seem to get your shorts in a knot whenever someone points this out. If you’re not one of them, what’s it to you?

  26. Suzanne says:

HEY NOW – do I hear you a ll knockin’ Sussex County? That’s where yours truly and her extremely lesbian and lovable female partner live with their 14 year old off spring.

I do have to admit, it was quite a culture shock moving here from the DC area – but not NEARLY as much as it was to move from Berlin, Germany to Grand Junction, Colorado (yep, from over 3 million people to a town with the biggest attraction being the local Dinosaur dig).

Hmm..wonder if I know that couple of 11 years that Miscreant its talking about – we Sussex County lesbians usually know each other (or about each other) LOL….

  27. Suzanne says:

    “……the slack-jawed….”

redneck slack-jawed please – get your facts right.

(…..as she runs and ducks from Miscreant)

  28. Miscreant says:

They live in southern New Jersey, Suzanne, and are outstanding individuals. I’ve never seen a couple , straight or gay, as devoted to each other as these two.

  29. Miscreant says:

“(…..as she runs and ducks from Miscreant)”

Not to worry. I was born here, have traveled extensively, then returned to Sussex and fully acknowledge my redneck roots. Basically, people are the same everywhere, with many of the differences merely superficial.

  30. Suzanne says:

I will never forget moving into our house – when the neighbor across the street came up to us and said “if you want your son to become a redneck, send’em over to play with my kids.”

  31. a. price says:

was that a warning? or an actual invite?
