That Didn’t Take Long
New Jersey files a lawsuit today to overturn a sports-betting ban:
A group representing gaming and horse-racing industries in New Jersey filed a lawsuit on Monday seeking to overturn a federal law that bans sports betting in New Jersey and most other U.S. states.
The suit filed against the federal government claims the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 violates five amendments to the U.S. Constitution by discriminating against the people of New Jersey and by regulating a matter that should be reserved to the states.
There’s more detail at the link (and this has been in the works for awhile), but the lesson here is that there is real money at stake here and other states are going to go to great lengths to get their piece. And they will work pretty hard to undermine any gambling advantages any state may have.
No legitimate reason to set up disparate treatment; no legitimate reason to ban gambling in the fist place.
I always thought that the people who were crowing about our monopoly were either stupid or dishonest.
Taxes from gambling are a form of ‘soak the poor’ and may have some merit in the eyes of a social Darwinist.
It is amazing how an alleged vice can become a virtue when Big Brother gets his skim.
“…. regulating a matter that should be reserved for the states.”
Now that is funny….. coming from the regulation state.
I think we should legalize prostitution. Unlike gambling, no other state is doing it and Delaware is uniquely suited:
1) We know how to mix being screwed with financial transactions
2) We have lots of chicken houses
3) Driving through Delaware has always been a quick in and out
I agree. Seriously.
Can we just stop bullshitting around and get to the bottom of the slippery slope already?
Also – People should be able to hunt Hobos.
