Tell me why…
…Michelle Bachmann should not be arrested immediately for treason or at the very least advocating and/or instigating a treasonous rebellion against the United States of America?
She appeared on a radio show in Minnesota earlier this week, describing elected Democratic officials as the “enemy” and encouraging her constituents to be “armed and dangerous.” Soon after, while appearing on Sean Hannity’s radio show, Bachmann went even further.
“We are headed down the lane of economic Marxism. More quickly, Sean, than anyone could have possibly imagined. It’s difficult for us to even keep up with it day to day….
“[I]t’s like Thomas Jefferson said, a revolution every now and then is a good thing. We are at the point, Sean, of revolution. And by that, what I mean, an orderly revolution — where the people of this country wake up get up and make a decision that this is not going to happen on their watch. It won’t be our children and grandchildren that are in debt. It is we who are in debt, we who will be bankrupting this country, inside of 10 years, if we don’t get a grip. And we can’t let the Democrats achieve their ends any longer.
“If Tim Geithner is successful under President Obama, and they move us to an international currency. Then we have no hope of standing on our own as a sovereign nation with our own economic system. It’s over. We can’t do that.”
Yes, notice she has repeated the lie we discussed yesterday that Geithner wants to move us onto some form of international currency. She went on to decry “tyranny” being “enforced upon the people,” adding that “our very freedom” is at stake. Now, let’s remember, what she is opposed to is the stimulus package and spending. So, the fact that President Obama wants to spend public money to stimulate the economy is tyrannical and oppressive, according to her. Yes, deficit spending, while certainly not desirable but necessary in times of economic crisis and war, is now taking away her very freedom under the Constitution.
If she really believes that, than of course, she is deranged and mentally ill, requiring immediate medical attention. Again, just like yesterday where our choice was between her being unbelievably dumb or simply a liar, I opted for her being a liar. And today, our choice is between her being mentally ill, or he just using hollow and false rhetoric to not only describe her opposition to President Obama’s plans, but also to chin up some outrage in the country.
My fear, at this point, is that lunacy from deranged politicians and their media allies is going to end up getting someone hurt. Republican officials believe they should emulate the insurgency tactics of the Taliban. They see themselves as “freedom fighters” taking on the “slide toward socialism.” They want a “revolution” because Americans “can’t let” Democrats succeed in taking away “our very freedom.”
I think it is too easy to laugh off Bachmann and those like her. Yes, we can assume she is dumb as a post (and she probably is) and insane (ditto), but I have gotten to the point where I think our choice is not binary. Incendiary rhetoric like this leads strange people to do strange things. And the first time a lemming follower heeds Bachmann’s calls for revolution, and kills a Democrat or a liberal or a government employee, than we must try, convict and hang Michelle Bachmann for treason. That is my first impulse. I am restrained by the notion that punishing her for her treason makes her a self fulfilling prophet to those who would listen to her. So we are left to laugh at her, while secretly fearing that one day, perhaps soon, a gun nut feeling their freedom is at stake due to deficit spending will kill a crossing guard.
It is insane, yet real.
i’ve seen this coming. the rhetoric from Hannity and Rush and Glenn, it was only a matter of time. she thinks they must “stop at nothing?” I say we stop at nothing to see her behind bars.
she is inciting violence, THAT is illegal.
She said this on Hannity’s show and Hannity backed her up. Bachmann may be insane and idiotic but this line of thought is being pushed by the mainstream of the remaining Republican party. It is quite alarming.
Even if we turned into a socialist/Marxist whatever, it would have no bearing on our constitutional standing as a representative democracy.
Like most of the morons out there, she conflates an economic system with a system of governance. And just for that display of retardation, she needs to go – man what a dimwit.
WOLVERINES!
sooo. donate money to ANYONE who runs against her? we have to get rid of this raging lunatic.
Bachmann may be insane and idiotic but this line of thought is being pushed by the mainstream of the remaining Republican party.
Exactly. But we are not supposed to notice, or somehow give this bit of rage some leeway or something.
Bachmann came this close to losing her seat last round. And she had to apologize prolifically for a bunch of McCarthyite accusations she made against Obama and Dem legislators. You’d think that she’d get it, but apparently getting attention by trying to resurrect the HUAC is her particular schitck.
Her rhetoric is right in line with the GOP strategy, which claims “we just aren’t getting our message across.” They will suffer until they realize that their message is getting across but being rejected.
The point progressives must hammer at, as often as possible, is that Clinton’s economy was wonderful despite a 39.5% top tax rate.
Is the U.S. Attorney General aware of this scandalous hate-mongering?
I don’t see much value in the treason talk. We thought it ridiculous when the right engaged in it, and we were correct.
Even if we turned into a socialist/Marxist whatever, it would have no bearing on our constitutional standing as a representative democracy.
I’m with you in spirit, but the Constitution does protect property rights, so capitalism is enshrined in our governance. We can tax or take private property with due process, but we can’t outlaw it.
Next up: Michelle Bachman introduces a resolution preventing Congress from outlawing private property.
Keep in mind that she came out of the pro-life movement. She’s essentially David Anderson with tits.
Geezer….
I never saw anyone on the left, let alone an actual Democratic Congressman on a cable news or radio show, advocate for a literal armed rebellion.
Comparing our opposition to Bush to this is ridiculous.
I never saw anyone on the left, let alone an actual Democratic Congressman on a cable news or radio show, advocate for a literal armed rebellion.
uh-oh… duck, DelDem, incoming!
No, I never did either. I’m talking about use of the word “treason.” Unless she actually starts planning a rebellion, I believe she’s within her First Amendment rights. To suggest otherwise is absurd over-reaction, IMHO.
Like I said in the post, I will wait until a gun nut follows her orders and kills someone until I really label her a traitor.
The biggest problem I have with Bachman, Beck, etc. is the silence (read:endorsement) from sane Republicans. I have no doubt that this talk will ultimately end in violence, unless someone can show me an alternate course or purpose for such language. For example, I hear no eloquence or call for greatness in these rants. They may quote Jefferson, but they sure as hell aren’t in the same league.
It reminds me of teenagers shooting their mouths off on a corner. It’s only a matter of time before words morph into swing of the fist.
The title of this post has put the Boomtown Rats in my head (“I Don’t Like Mondays“), which, ironically enough, tells the (true-???) story of a shooting for absolutely ludicrous reasons.
Tell me why
I don’t like Monday’s…
The premise is:
Tell me why [you shot the people]
[because] I don’t like Mondays…
Yeesh.
“Like I said in the post, I will wait until a gun nut follows her orders and kills someone until I really label her a traitor.”
I dunno. I sort of think you have to concoct a better plan than a single nut going out in a blaze of glory for it to be treason. Now if there’s a militia group swearing their oaths under the beaming smile of Ms. Bachmann’s portrait, and she knows about and encourages it, you might be entering the ballpark of treason. Ann Coulter seems a more likely target in this regard.
Smitty: I believe it’s inspired by a news story of a girl who shot up a school; when the cops asked her why, she said “I don’t like Mondays.”
Standing up for the Constitutional order against the new world order is patriotism not treason. Criticizing the government is patriotic. Don’t you all remember those lessons from 8 years of W. That is all I heard.
Congresswoman Bachmann is right to be concerned about our betrayal of this nation in the new climate change summit and the surrender of our place in the global currency markets. The revolution she wants is one of thought not violence. You know that. Keep trying. You make a joke of this argument. It is fair to argue currency policy or climate change policy, but you rather play a poor imitation of John Stewart. I realize that you are just engaging in hyperbole to gin up some attention just like she is. I see that it works on both sides.
A call for peaceful revolution, like that seen in the Phillipines or the Ukraine, now constitutes an act of treason if one loon, contrary to the clear intent of a speaker, engages in an act of violence? Dissent, rather than being patriotic, is now a hanging offense with Obama in office? Good God, folks, think about what you are saying here — for it goes well-beyond even the most strident “with us or against us” rhetoric of the Bush Administration and its supporters.
And be aware that if such a move were ever tried, there would be a revolution that would make Paris in 1789 look like a Disney cartoon.
There is no new world order.
No one is dissing any of you for criticizing the government. We are dissing you (and laughing at you) for having to make up alot of crap about the New World Order and new global currencies and about climate change.
You want people to stop laughing at you? You want people to take your criticisms seriously? Then start talking about something real rather than this made up scary stupidity that always seems to keep you wingnuts in a tizzy.
Get in the game or be laughed at.
Rhymes, you have no idea how dangerous is it what Bachman is doing. she is telling flat out lies, and making people with fear and guns more fearful. She thinks she is just on her soap box, possibly building a base for 2012, but the idiots with guns in “real america” dont know how to use anything but violence… like all terrorists.
If she simply had dissent, that would be one thing, but she is telling people the only way to combat the “tyranny” is revolt.
Do you know how WE combated bush? we organized and voted. no one, no US CONGRESS PERSON, at least, hinted that violence is the answer. she WILL get people killed. she WILL be the cause of Americans killing Americans for political reasons and THAT is treason.
No, it is not.
Let me offer you the ONLY legitimate definition of treason in the United States.
Article III Section 3. Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court.
Bachmann has done none of these things, and even if some idiot were to actually kill someone and cite her words, she STILL will not have done that.
Of course, if you are advocating that we ignore the US Constitution and try (and execute) someone for treason based upon something other than what is contained in that definition above, then feel free to do so. But realize that you are coming much closer to the definition of treason than Bachmann is — who is simply suggesting, a la Thomas Jefferson — that there might come a day when the people of the US need to “alter or abolish” the current form of government.
i havent called for her to be executed. Ive called for her to shut up and stop inciting violent rebellion.
and FYI the majority of the people of the US LIKE the government. you people in the minority who dont know the meanings of the words “communist” or”socialist” (obama is NOT a socialist i WISH he was but sadly no) need to either realize you are a small group, OR do what we did. raise peaceful awareness through FACTS and vote the government out.
but you people know no other way than violence *cough oklahoma city MLK*cough* so i hope the attempts at violence that are sure to occur fail, and only the people who commit them die.(aka suicide bombers who are the only ones killed in their attacks) These are acts that Bachman, and Glenn, and Hannity, and Rush, and Cantor are hinting is the only way to win. If violence against the majority is the only way to win, maybe you should ask yourselves if you are really on the side of good.
Unlike Bachman, i believe in America. I believe in the rule of law and majority rule. and just so ya know, for the few good things jefferson did, he was a raging hypocrite who touted liberty while owning and fucking his slaves.
I suppose that I could point out that their alleged “hinting [violence] is the only way to win” (which I do not believe they are doing) is exercising the same First Amendment rights as members of the Communist Party did back in the 1950s when the Supreme Court ruled that advocating the theoretical necessity of the violent overthrow of the US government was constitutionally protected speech.
Of course, if you are advocating that those of us on the right have fewer liberties than you folks on the left, please come out and say it.
The communist party was never a serious political movement. the republican party is a major party. so you lose there.
it IS however a crime to incite riots, or order killings. true, while Backman hasn’t done that YET, her speech will get people hurt or killed.
rest assured, one of them will. one of them will say someone should kill a liberal. and when it happens, they will be arrested, than more people will die because right wing supremacists will be “defending free speech”.
Pretend you live in tyranny and oppression all you want.
but again i say, if violence is the only way you can think of to advance you ideas, you should rethink those ideas.
The people did not vote for this New World order that President Obama is surrendering to on the world stage. I am sorry but I don’t take anyone as informed who doesn’t know about the most talked about fact in foreign policy circles. Some people have used the term NWO for short hand for the wildest of conspiratorial ideas, but I use it in the same vein that President Bush 41 and the Council of Foreign Relations use it.
The American world order has us a super power. Our currency is the world standard. Our military is the force for global peace and the Pax Americana which has existed for almost 30 years. Nothing happens in the UN without our consent. We are a dominate force in international monetary policies through the World Bank and IMF. English is the language of trade. Dollar diplomacy rules the world through international corporations.
Some in the world resent these facts. They propose a shift. China wants the 21st century to emerge as their century as much as the 20th century was the American Century. Others want an entirely different way to order world affairs. They want a New order which is based upon international consensus, a global tax or mandatory foreign aid to poor countries, a global climate regime which would allow international economic planning, an enhanced, standing, dedicated international peace keeping forces, global covenants on a myriad of issues to push local laws to an international consensus on children, women’s rights, guns, sustainable development, gay rights, and human rights. The role of the U. S. would shrink and the role of Europe and others would increase.
The first step that both of these sides agree to a global currency. It would not replace local currencies. It would be a unit for international exchange at least for now.
The second step is the global climate treaty which would allow the international forces to regulate our economy.
The third step is all of these international covenants which would undermine our rights. Some nations would gain at least on paper, but ours would lose. It is fair though and that is the only value which matters to the left.
If you want sources just do a search of the UN web site and foreign affairs mag. It is no secret. Some people think it is a great way to go. Some of us do not. That is the American way. What is not the American way is to stop your ears and miss the debate.
We are losing our dollar due to hyper printing and weakening our position in the world. It has to stop. It is opening the doors to those who want to see us fail in Russia, China and elsewhere.
I don’t know what you heard, but I am talking about the serious issues and so is the Congresswoman even if she is given to a little drama.
wow.
I for one am truly frightened that people are buying into this lunacy. We cant even tell them they are wrong or we are infringing their rights.
and when things start to improve, it will all be part of the plan…..
David, get help.
And you are still missing the real picture.
The New World Order crap wasn’t real when Clinton was in office and it certainly is not real now. It is a vector for one incredibly silly and remarkably unaccomplished woman to get some publicity. And she gets that publicity via people who are completely eager to have something, anything to be scared of.
So I guess that fact that repubs are talking this seriously says something about who they still can’t face the economy they broke. Just more on to a crazy conspiracy theory and everything will be OK.
Apparently you are quite comfortable with your delusions. Just stay out of the way of the rest of us.
Sheeple.
paranoid lunatic
The people did not vote for this New World order that President Obama is surrendering to on the world stage.
How do you know what people voted for?
Believe it or not, a. price, members of major political parties have the same first amendment rights as political fringeoids like Communists and Obamunists.
Now, if someone actually incites murder (not offers a theoretical justification of revolution that someone acts upon, but actual incitement), I’ll support their prosecution. But if what this post proposes is tried, I’ll be in the streets with many other Americans.
And for what it is worth, I find David pretty loony, too.
in the streets doing what exactly? and if someone takes a shot a political figure because they felt Michelle Backman and Sean Hannity explained that it was patriotic? If it starts a movement, as Glenn claims it already has, that they aren’t doing anything to say “oh by the way, violence is not acceptable”. What then?
A bit of a revolution took place on 06 and 08, it was carried out with votes, not guns. that is how you win in America. It was carried out because the current leadership proved unable to govern properly. Now, the former cheer leaders of that failed ruling party are making up wild apocalyptic predictions about what this new leadership will do to get people to get rid of them.
and as of yet, they have not tried to organize voters, or offer a better plan. they are intentionally building up the idea that radical action (among proud gun owners i might add) is the only answer. THAT is wrong. you wont succeed that way, you will loose and people will get hurt because of it. look how well the south did in the civil war… one could argue they are still recovering.
Overthrowing the government by peaceful means, you idiot.
I remember how Corazon Aquino came to power.
