With hindsight, the funny thing about that passage is that Carper was clearly lying. He cast exactly the votes that Roth would have.
You don’t really sling the mud. You praise him to the ends of the earth, but damn him, just like Carper did. You point out his many years of experience, over and over. You thank him profusely for his many years of service. You laud his wise judgment, developed over many years in office.
You then run a positive campaign showing yourself out, active and energetic, playing touch football, riding a bicycle, on a daily jog, backpacking, mountain-climbing, pressing the flesh.
It’s subtle, but effective in reinforcing the “I”m Young, He’s Old” campaign theme.
And if that’s all you’ve got, don’t even bother running.
…and then Castle passes out at the Italian festival.
Well, yeah, you can hope for that, if you’re evil enough to routinely wish for bad things to happen to people. But I don’t think most sane candidates would make that a centerpiece of their campaign strategy.
