That was hilarious! I find the protocol around the queen (and the conservatives sudden interest in it) so weird and archaic. I don’t like the idea of royalty. America definitely has it right by not having royalty.
UI….read the book ‘Class’ (damn I forget the author). He maintains that the U.S. is the most startegized country on earth. His theory goes something like this:
Top out of sight
High upper class
Middle upper class
Lower upper class
High middle class
Middle middle class
Lower middle class
Low high class
Low middle class
Low lower class
Bottom out of sight
X Class
Now the ‘top out of sight’ (we don’t even know their names) and the ‘bottom out of sight’ (the homeless) have things in common: like neither class carries money.
Now, thee and me (and lots of others) are in the X class. In this class you can float between the stratas w/ease. 🙂
U.K. only has ‘Upper Class’ and ‘Not Upper Class’.
Pandora, I always remember the bit about knowing ‘the rich’ men from the ‘pols’….lesser beings pull up their pant legs before sitting down as to not strech the area around the knee on their synthetic fabric….the rich, always wearing all natural fabric, just plop down because there is no worry about baggy knees. Class distictions are oh, so subtle.

Susan, the author is Paul Fussell. Geez, I read that book during my college years!
