Quote of the Day

Filed in National by on April 7, 2009

The Republican Party has backed itself into a regional, ideological and demographic corner — the one marked “rural, conservative, white.” The party is out of step with the nation it aspires to lead, and until room is made for those with a range of views — and those with different racial and ethnic backgrounds — it is hard to imagine how the party can achieve its dream of establishing a new “big tent” majority.

I’m beginning to think they’ve realized they’ve backed themselves into a corner, hence the revolution talk.

The party line is that Republicanism is what’s good for all kinds of people. And the sooner everybody accepts that, the sooner they can have the Big Tent.

    pandora,

I don’t think the Republicans have realized their dire straights yet. In fact, they are kicking out the reality-based Republicans when they say what Republicans aren’t ready to hear. I’ll believe the Republicans are ready when we start hearing about a new conservative intellectual class. Who they have posing as intellectuals, the Jonah Goldbergs and other affirmative action conservatives, are not cutting it.

I think the revolution talk is because they don’t understand what is happening and feel besieged from all sides.
