Mike Castle Calls Markell Budget “Unacceptable”
I guess ol’ Pocket Change needs to brush up his wingnut bona fides after getting his fetus murder bill passed.

Duh? What a total tool.
As a former governor, Castle has broken the customs of courtesy in criticizing Markell… What better proof Markell is not part of the Delaware Way.

I have to say I was a little surprised by this. Castle is nothing if not a foppishly effete, manners conscious ass. This is out of character – so I guess he is feeling some heat from the wingnut side of his base.
Anyway, Castle has got to go. I hope Scott Spencer or John Carney is up for it.
The Republican strategy for 2010 will be to vote against any tax increase. They will try to force the Democrats to pass tax increases, no matter how modest, on their own without any Republican support. Castle’s statement fits into this strategy. Progressives and Democrats should begin to fight against this now. Personal attacks against Castle, while enjoyable, will not suffice.
What do you suggest?
For starters, we should contact Republicans such as Lianne Sorenson who have some support from Democrats and are in the Reality Community. We should try to get their commit to support a budget bill with tax increases (or face the consequences in the next election). We may also push the Republicans to come up with an alternative in a timely fashion. Judging by Cloutier’s comments and Castle’s comments, I doubt that they can come up with anything positive and realistic. Also, the bill that comes up for a vote must have significant popular support. In particular, it must have support from key Democratic constituencies who will vote in 2010.

You mean we can look forward to union guys carrying signs pushing for higher taxes on the rich? Good luck with that, too.
truthatlast brings up some good points. I hope Delaware doesn’t turn into a big fight like California (although our Constitution is not insane). I wonder if Markell can force Republicans to put out their own budget proposal, like Obama did with the Congressional Republicans?

If Republicans are permitted to have any leverage at all, they will hold out for their pet anti-union issues: Prevailing wage, charters, vouchers.
That’s all they got. That is what they hold up when you challenge them to name their spending cuts. They are doing this for their Chamber of Commerce masters – but when it comes to cutting real services to real constituents, they want Democrats to take the heat for that.
Any Dems who end up opposing Markell’s budget aren’t being fiscally responsible – they are simply helping Republicans insert their anti-union, anti-public education clauses.

That’s why the idea should be for them to put out an entire budget. Prevailing wage MIGHT save a little money, though not from the operating budget. Charters are revenue-neutral, and vouchers actually cost the state money because, while vouchers are cheaper than actually educating the kids at public schools, the initial outlay for the 30,000 kids already in private school would overwhelm any savings.
The problem with issuing such a challenge is that the Dems in the GA are not on the same page as Markell.

Geezer, exactly. I don’t think the GA dems necessarily have to be on the same page as Markell if he makes it Markell vs. the Republicans. Eventually, however, Markell needs to get the GA dems thinking in his direction. I think he needs to flex a little muscle, like vetoing their pitiful gambling bill.

Answer to Geezer
I said “significant popular support.” That doesn’t mean a majority. What about, for example, a tax cut of 1/2 percent for everyone earning under $35K and make it up by increasing the rate at the top? That might also help with Democratic constituents.
