The consent of two sovereign persons constitutes marriage. This consent is expressed in “I do” and it is witnessed by the church and the state. Witnessing is not always necessary, if there are none, like on a desert island.
What constitutes sovereignty? Discipline, control and dominion over oneself and one’s passions and obedience to proper authority are part of sovereignty. Responsibility as a citizen to promote the common good is requiredSovereignty bears the imperative of charity. There is good will in sovereignty and it draws us together in love.
