Comment Rescue: Le DuPont Ancien Régime
John Manifold makes a timely observation.
Were I still frequenting downtown bars on weeknights, I’d have poked my nose into the Gold Ballroom 9 days ago to see how widely they spaced the tables at the Steve Forbes dinner. Tix were $150 each. [My taste runs to seeing Harry Kalas and a bunch of athletes for $50 at Cavaliers.]
Big draw: seeing Pete du Pont and Forbes in the same room. 2 geeky bespectacled Princetonians who got gold bars at their christening. To his credit, PSduP IV looks 10 years younger than Forbes, even though he’s 12 years older.
But I digress. There was a time when du P could have filled Baynard Stadium on a rainy night at $100/pop. But the old sailor has lost his trim. Just three days before the dinner, the GOP was still trying to fill tables, badgering its aging loyalists with voicemail and spam. I have a feeling that Forbes got to shake everyone’s hand at least twice. And I could have grabbed a few dozen macaroons without bothering anyone.
How is the Protackian rable ever going to fuse itself to the Vicmead crowd?
Simple. It isn’t.
Interesting story. I had been curious how many people were interested in seeing Steve Forbes.
Actually, as a “flaming liberal” I must say that Pete DuPont was quite a good Governor . I had great success working with him concerning the Environment and Energy and I usually got my way……In 1978 .he presented me with an award for “Energy Awareness”
Wow, Frieda puts up a compliment (and very credible one, as Frieda is very credible) of Pete DuPont, and the thread dies.
Pete has a nice personal style that clicked on a local scale. He was a holy terror on small-bore “environment” issues and created an Energy Office that lasted for two years. He last won an election in 1980 and has gone wacko in his dotage. Sample this:

I live close to Vicmead, no problem.

Mike must have been let in the door at Iron Hill. I wonder what the cover charge was.
The door was controlled via router.
