‘Bulo’s Music For the Masses: Lost in the ’80’s, Volume 1

Filed in National by on April 18, 2009

The Beast Who Slumbers generally likes his music the way he likes his roadkill-raw and visceral. He also likes music that engages both his brain and his butt.

So, if you’re looking for techno-electronica dance trance crapola like, say, Echo & the Bunnymen, you will have to look elsewhere.

El Somnambulo sets out to prove to you that, while the ’80’s were a lost decade politically, there was a lot of great music, especially with a roots feel, that you may have overlooked. Sometimes the videos look so…’80’ish, but the music more than makes up for that.

One caveat, while ‘bulo considers the Replacements (or ‘placemats to their loyal fans) one of the greatest bands of the ’80’s, they were almost always so bleeping drunk when performing live that it was impossible to find a decent music video of them. Otherwise , they’d be here. Let’s get started.

Jason & the Scorchers- ‘Absolutely Sweet Marie’- “Fervor” (1983)

Georgia Satellites- ‘Keep Your Hands to Yourself’- “Georgia Satellites” (1986)

John Hiatt- ‘Have a Little Faith’- “Bring the Family” (1987)

Sonic Youth- ‘Teenage Riot’- “Daydream Nation” (1988)

The Blasters- ‘Marie, Marie’- “The Blasters” (1981)

Nobody knows the best of ’80’s music like El Somnambulo knows the best of ’80’s music. He’s just gettin’ warmed up and will be back next week with Volume 2. And, trust ‘bulo, you ain’t seen the last of the Blasters, not by a long shot.

I hated that Georgia Satellites song. They played it over and over and over when it was popular, until I hated it.

  2. There’s always a place in rock ‘n roll for great stoopid fun. That’s where the Georgia Satellites reside.

Besides, what were YOU doing watching Georgia Satellites back then? Sesame Street ‘bulo can understand, but MTV? Where were your parents?

  3. Unstable Isotope says:

LOL ‘Bulo. I was in high school in ’86. We had MTV at home, back in the day, when they played videos. I can definitely see “Keep Your Hands to Yourself” as a fun song, but it was just so overplayed and I lived in a town with two radio stations – country and pop. Oh, how times have changed.

  4. Von Cracker says:

    May I suggest THIS?

  5. wait, yes. those guys are good

  6. Von Cracker says:

    Glad you like

  7. Unstable Isotope says:

    VC,

I’ll never get that song out of my head now. It gets stuck in there everytime I play Wii Bowling.

Did you hear that Cleveland beat NYY 22-4? In baseball! How is that possible?

  8. Von Cracker says:

    Shitty pitching, UI!

The first score I saw of that game was 18-2 in the 5th. LMAO!

Phils beat the Cards in a game last year 20 to 2, then proceeded to go into their typical June swoon…

  9. ‘Skinheads’ was already on ‘bulo’s radar. Camper Van Beethoven may just be the best name in rock history, they were really funny (‘Joe Stalin’s Cadillac’, too many others to mention), and they could play anything.

He also considered ‘Turquoise Jewelry’ (“Take off that jumpsuit, you look like Grace Slick”) and ‘We Saw Jerry’s Daughter’, but couldn’t find a decent vid of the former or ANY vid of the latter.

Von Cracker is channeling the ‘bulo vibe. Say-y-y, Von CRACKER? You don’t suppose…
