RNC Voting Today!

The meeting of the Republican National Committee ends today with votes on resolutions. If you remember, party activists forced a resolution to change the name of the Democratic party to the “Democrat Socialist Party,” despite the opposition of the Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele. The resolution would have forced Steele to refer to Democrats as the “Democrat Socialist Party” (despite the fact there is already a party called that), though I’m not sure of the enforcement mechanism. As you can imagine, the comedy would be priceless if this resolution passed.

Michael Steele may have won his first leadership battle. It’s now being reported that the resolution has been changed. Instead of renaming the Democratic party, it condemns it.

RNC member David Norcross of New Jersey, who had been a sponsor of the resolution, told CNN: “The language is being changed so that the proposers and chairman Steele are on the same page.” Steele had opposed this thing from the start, and had sought to avoid the spectacle — yes, Michael Steele thought this was too goofy.

Instead, Norcross said the resolution will now simply “condemn the Democrats’ march to socialism” instead of renaming the Dems as the “Democrat Socialist Party.” Wisconsin GOP chairman Reince Priebus, a Steele ally, predicted that such an altered version should pass easily once the final language has cleared the resolutions committee.

They sure took all the fun out of the resolution. Now it’s *yawn* about how Republicans don’t like Democrats. I think Steele really averted a PR disaster for the party this time.
