Open Thread: Racism Edition

All I can say about these links is OMG WTF.

From the South Carolina GOP, a Facebook update comparing Michelle Obama to an ape.

Rusty DePass, a prominent South Carolina Republican activist, is now apologizing for making a racist joke about Michelle Obama, and taken down the Facebook page where he made it — though he does make sure to shift the blame and say that Michelle started it.

DePass commented on a story about a gorilla escaping from a local zoo: “I’m sure it’s just one of Michelle’s ancestors – probably harmless.”

“I am as sorry as I can be if I offended anyone,” said DePass. “The comment was clearly in jest.”

Also from South Carolina, a racist “joke” about Barack Obama:

Indigo Journal, a liberal blog in South Carolina, reports that GOP operative Mike Green posted a racist joke about President Obama on his Twitter account over the weekend — and in a brief conversation with TPM, Green did not deny it. (Late Update: Green has now admitted it in a new set of Tweets, and apologized. See new section after the jump.)

Green posted this, then deleted it some time later:

JUST HEARD OBAMA IS GOING TO IMPOSE A 40% TAX ON ASPIRIN BECAUSE IT’S WHITE AND IT WORKS.

From Tennessee we get this charming story:

It’s a busy Monday, as one Republican official already got busted doing racist anti-Michelle Obama stuff on the Facebook, and now we’re learning about some super-funny racist emails sent out by a Tennessee GOP legislative staffer for Republican state senator Diane Black. Let’s meet the charming Sherri Goforth, who sent the image above to god knows how many people because, ha, a Negro in the White House?

Nashville Is Talking reports:

When I asked her if she understood the controversial nature of the photo, Goforth would only say she felt very bad about accidentally sending it to the wrong list. When I gave her a second chance to address the controversial nature of the email, she again repeated that she only felt bad about sending it to the wrong list of people.

“I went on the wrong email and I inadvertently hit the wrong button,” Goforth told NIT. “I’m very sick about it, and it’s one of those things I can’t change or take back.”

She’s sick she got caught, not that she sent the picture.

Image is below the fold…

President Obama is “depicted” in the lower right-hand corner.

  1. So bad, we had to post it twice.

  2. liberalgeek says:

See… these are funny, but jokes about a pregnant Palin aren’t funny because… ummm… crap, why aren’t they funny again?

  3. Because she’s a Republican, get it?

  4. Rich Boucher says:

I just tried to call Diane Black’s office to try to obtain Sherri Goforth’s email, but I just got a message, no one answered live.

    (615) 741-1999 is the number.

And for the record, I left a message requesting that Diane terminate Sherri Goforth’s employment with her organization.

For people working on beyond the cutting edge of technology it seems that the technology amplifies some very old school behavior and attitudes.

  6. liberalgeek says:

I keep forgetting. I really wish one of these guys would tell a really good white guy joke.

  7. Rich Boucher says:

I hope everyone else on here calls the number, as well. Goforth needs to be fired for this.

You haven’t watch Bill O’Reilly lately have you? He’s a non-stop white guy joke.

  9. liberalgeek says:

I find it funny that her name is Goforth.

  10. arthur says:

I always thought Michelle Obama looked more like a vampire.

  11. Yes, Rich, I think the last one is the worst one and her so-called apology doesn’t cut it.

  12. anonone says:

Speaking of racism, here is the latest in right-wing racist terrorism:

    http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2009/06/race_war_on_the_border.php?ref=fpblg

A whole family attacked by ‘wingers and all killed except the Mother.

  13. pandora says:

I hate this talk. And it’s the racism that underlies all the other talk (secession, socialism, your guns are about to be taken, etc) that creates a perfect storm. It’s what simmered at the core of the Tea Parties – because they didn’t exist until Obama became President. Sorry, but if you weren’t out protesting debt, deficits, and bail-outs during Bush you really lost any chance at legitimacy.

  14. liberalgeek says:

A1, that is some crazy shit. Wow.

  15. liberalgeek says:

It is worth noting that this AZ white supremacist home invasion is not unlike Charles Manson’s plan for inciting a race war.

  16. Von Cracker says:

People who make these posters, comments, and such must have a very low opinion of themselves….deep down, in a place that they won’t talk about.

If you remember your middle school, demeaning others is the easiest way to prop oneself up in the eyes of peers…

    Fortunately, those peers aren’t everyone.

  17. There is a recession, our debt is going up every day and foreign governments are balking at buying more of it.

Both sides need to get a grip.

  18. farsider says:

Now that there is funny, I don’t care who you are.

  19. Tnblue says:

    sherri goforth email

    sherri.goforth@capitol.tn.gov

    diane.black@capitol.tn.gov

I couldn’t be more ashamed of my old state of TN. This state is swarmed by hate from one end to the other. Blood doesn’t run orange anymore.

  20. This uis certainly beyond the pale of what is acceptable.

Yet somehow calling a prominent female officeholder a slutty flight attendant doesn’t offend you in the least.

I guess your opposition to bigotry is based entirely upon the party identification of the victim and the victimizer.

  21. Yet somehow calling a prominent female officeholder a slutty flight attendant doesn’t offend you in the least.

Do you have fun making stuff up? That’s not true at all. Calling an adult woman slutty was in poor taste but you somehow think that’s worse than the racism depicted here. If you’re an example of how Republicans think then I can definitely see why it will be a long time before people vote for you again.
