Deep thought

Filed in Delaware, International by on June 24, 2009

The Republicans are doing their best to not allow people to remember that everything they said months and months ago seemed to be for the small businesses in this country and how they, the small businesses are the ones that create the majority of the jobs in this country.

It seems that now, they are trying to put a square peg in a round hole by trying to say that small businesses will drop health care costs in favor of the public option.  Making them….uh…what exactly? I might have missed a few of my courses in college, but, man I just seem to remember something about costs and being able to reduce them meaning you have lower overhead, better margins and/or some shit like that.

So I guess now, they support Big Business this quarter, until that doesn’t poll well of course.

Some blogs can’t go away soon enough.  It’s almost hard to imagine that some of our Delaware bloggers have started up business after business after business after business after business.  Guess they never offered health care…wonder why?

  1. Art Downs says:

Health care is costlier than it was in the past.

One big factor is the improvement in diagnostic services and pharmaceuticals. Two generations ago there was no MRI testing and few antibiotics were available. Many ailments were considered untreated. There was no such thing as heart surgery. These lifesaving procedures were unknown. Eliminate them and look at the cost of health care dropping. Move to the third world if you would like to enjoy such an economy.

There is also the litigation tax that includes ‘defensive medicine’ that involves procedures that are of no clinical benefit but provide a defense against a potential lawsuit. The rising cost of malpractice insurance is borne by consumers that we call patients. Then there are the lawsuits involving the side effects of pharmaceuticals. Penicillin was considered a wonder drug when it was introduced, yet a substantial percentage of the population is allergic to the substance. Under current rules, it would never have come to market. Think of the lives that would have been lost if we never had penicillin made available to the public.

It is easy to blame ‘greedy insurance companies’ but how many health insurance companies are mutual firms run for the benefit of the policy holders? This is also the case for many malpractice insurance companies.

There are some reluctances to provide every serviced requested as insurance companies act as ‘gatekeepers’ to contain costs that must be passed on to employees. Compare this to the often arbitrary rationing associated with various forms of government run ‘health care’ and you will no be eager to adopt ‘Euro-Style’ medicine.

Naturally, those looking for the tastiest version of any free lunch will trust the good intentions of Big Brother.

  2. The thought of some private insurance carriers going out of business terrifies some people. The people that work at insurance carriers, politicians who depend on their donations and brainwashed Republicans.

Obama said it about their fears “it’s not logical.” They foes of the public option have two logically inconsistent beliefs: that government run health care will be so awful with wait times because the government is so terrible and that government health care will be so efficient that it will drive private insurers out of business.

  3. Here’s that part of the press conference:

Q: Won’t that drive private insurers out of business?

THE PRESIDENT: Why would it drive private insurers out of business? If private insurers say that the marketplace provides the best quality healthcare, if they tell us that they’re offering a good deal, then why is it that the government — which they say can’t run anything — suddenly is going to drive them out of business? That’s not logical.

  4. it’s amazing how predictable Republicans can be while being hypocrites at the same time.

  8. You missed a lot of courses.

    The public option will:

will require $1.6 trillion in new money

will require new taxes on small businesses

    will restrict patient choice

will have numerous regulations and restrictions like Medicare

will reduce costs by adding another $1.6 trillion???

will do nothing to reduce malpractice costs

will not allow choices but will increase hassles

    will cost more than estimated

will add to the $74 trillion in unfunded Medicare liabilities

If you want Universal Care this choice is a disaster, if you want poorer care, more government and less efficiency go right ahead.

No wonder the AMA is balking.

Art and Mike refuse to bring up the ‘Federal Employees Health Benefits Program’, reputed to be the best healthcare plan in the nation!
    http://www.opm.gov/insure/health/

Instead they throw out their uninformed opinions and straw men.

Obama promised to push for a healthcare plan like this one, but available to all Americans, which is exactly what he is doing.

Actually, Obama’s biggest problem is in his own party – the Senate Dems, Baucus, Carper & Co., who are pressing for a “bipartisan” deal. This is defeatism at a time when the Dems can dominate and get a good bill passed.

As far as paying for the plan, Obama has a plan for that as well, which includes healthcare cost savings and non-renewal of the Bush tax cuts. Go for it Barack!!!

Critics also don’t acknowledge that the current cost estimate is $1.6 trillion over ten years, and in the same ballpark as the Cheney/Bush Iraq War, btw!

It’s Blue Cross, or some other insurer….just like anyone else can buy.
