Breaking: Eddy Parker Unable to Run
Brian Shields tweeted that Parker (the Dem candidate for Adams’ seat) is unable to run. No details yet.
UPDATE by Delaware Dem: Geek and I posted at the same time. Here is my post.
Eddy Parker, chosen by 1 vote over the late Thurman Adams’ daughter last week at a Democratic “Meet the Candidates” meeting, has withdrawn his candidacy. I wonder if anger at the rejection of Polly Mervine is a factor here. The Sussex Countian broke the story, but it gave no reason for Parker’s withdrawal.
I wonder what Brian (and Eddy Parker) means by Eddy being “unable” to run?

Yeah, I took it as Parker was “ineligible” somehow. Hopefully we’ll get more info soon.
Has anybody seen his birth certificate?
Good point, A1.
hell hath no fury like a women scorn
Finally internet access!
I heard rumblings that there was something to do with federal money. Unsubstantiated, and I have no idea what it means.
SCCOR stated that the Democrat County chair said he chose to step down and they will pick a new candidate. It all happened today.
Probably Mervine. She had second place voting.
I cannot see how the Hatch Act comes into play here unless his job as the director of assessments for the county is fully funded by the Feds (USDA?). This does not look good for Pat Ewing – her first major decision as county chair and it seems to have gotten the best of her.
I agree MJ. Now whoever the candidate is will already be behind.
Brian:
It is Democratic County chair. Please don’t be like a mindless Republican and sound like an idiot.
Maybe Polly put a horse head in his bed.
I do understand, and I apologize for the typo.
I don’t think that the candidate will be behind too much, they missed one event at a GOP grassroots organization. So, they just missed a possible unfavorable showing at one press event. Aside from the switcheroo news, the event doesn’t put their new candidate behind too much. I am assuming that Mervine will be the choice, and if that is the case, she already has name recognition over Parker, her father’s campaign to back her.
She would have an edge over Parker. The result would be a wash. If anything, the buzz would create more press for her to help her out.
SCCOR was gracious in allowing us to step in with our, then unannounced, 19th District candidate, Wendy Jones. Her addition to this race will make for some interesting candidate conversations.
I think the Democratic candidate will have a big deficit, for sure. But will the Libertarian candidate siphon votes from the Republican? I think with Adams Mervine it could happen. She has a known name, a sympathy factor and perhaps a third candidate working in her favor. I hope the Democratic party hasn’t given up on this seat.
Whether or not the D is behind will depend on whether there was a legit reason for Parker to drop out, or whether the Powers That Be put pressure on him to step aside for the golden child.
If it’s the former, the Party will easily unify around Mervine or whomever. If it’s the latter, you’re looking at a splintered Party.
You’re absolutely right ‘Bulo. Parker’s reasons for dropping out are really important in these circumstances.
another inherited seat?
regardless of her qualifications, do you think the voters of the 19th will line up to cast a nepostism vote?
It got BoBo Biden elected, but has teh Biden spectacle left a sour taste in enough mouths to swing sentiment against Ms Mervine?
There’s the difference down here in LSD – there isn’t that much of a backlash when a family member succeeds another in office (Biff Lee has his daddy’s seat in the House, George Cole has his daddy’s seat on county council, Hocker’s son is on the town council for Millville). If this were a race up in NCCo, I might be worried about the nepotism, but things are a bit different down in the western part of Sussex.
Anoni: There’s ample precedent at the legislative level. Nancy Cook, Cathy Cloutier, and Dori Connor all essentially ‘inherited’ their seats following their spouses’ deaths. ‘Bulo’s sure that there are other examples. (Oh yeah, thanks, MJ, ‘bulo forgot all about the Biffster.)
However, not even the sympathy factor could enable Herman ‘The Lesser’ Holloway, Jr. to win the Senate seat upon his father’s death.
So, the vox populi has some standards, however low the bar may be.
El Somnambulo is on the record as despising this ‘passing down’ of seats, but it obviously is not shared by the voters.
Actually… to be really honest, I would prefer that a conservative Republican win this seat rather than a conservative Democrat.
I agree with DD – at least we’d know what we’d be getting. If Booth wins the seat, then there will be an all-out effort (people, $$$) to win his seat in the house from the GOP.
I think Wendy Jones will earn votes from both sides, because she is a real person running with real passion for changing Delaware for the better.
Siphon, steal.. don’t like those terms. Makes it sound like the votes belong to the candidate. Prefer “earned”.
I will have her bio and possibly her platform tomorrow after the meeting in Milton to make it official.
