Chaos Theory?

Filed in National by on July 8, 2009

There’s a certain deliberate chaos to the Obama Administration.  Whether we’re discussing the stimulus, health care or cap and trade, there’s a method – and the method appears to be create diversions while quietly staying on track behind the scenes.  Now, I’m not claiming this will work, but I also don’t think that statements like Rahm Emanuel’s health care trigger option or Harry Reid suddenly developing a spine are simply off the cuff responses.  The on message/off message scenarios come across as a game of good cop/bad cop which leave everyone scratching their heads.

And, yes, it is exhausting and nerve racking.  But is it smart politics?  To which I answer… only time will tell.

What I do know (and we all learned during the Democratic Primary and Presidential Campaign) is that Obama plays the long game which is fortunate since Republicans seem only capable of playing Whack-A-Mole.  I also know that Emanuel isn’t a loose cannon and Reid apparently took a trip to the woodshed.  So is the chaos deliberate? And, if so, is it smart?

well if diversion is your theory that would certainly explain the vice-president….

  2. pandora says:

    Feeling saucy today, Steve? 😉

just eschewing capital letters because the shift key on this borrowed computer does not work

I think there are off the cuff responses. Not to say there isn’t a method-to-the-madness so to speak. But I, for one, do not appreciate turning every verbal early ejaculation from the BHO White House into some grand scheme… like Obama playing this long game nobody can sort out. Sometime people just say shit. Biden’s a good example…

  5. pandora says:

I’ll give you Biden, but I’m having trouble seeing Rahm go rogue.

  6. Dorian Gray says:

I don’t think it’s “rogue” necessarily. Some people are naturally honest. RE strike me as one of those people. Plus he curses almost as much as I do… almost.

Politics is about pretending. Don’t say X yet and say Y in such a way so middle aged housewives in Texas agree. Frame issue Z thusly so so-and-so in the income bracket such-and-such poll in our favor.

RE seems to be a guy like me. Fuck you we’re doing this. If that doesn’t work, fuck you, we’ll try that. It’s not a mysterious masterplan I don’t think.

  7. Interesting thought. I don’t think the Democratic spine implant is an accident but I don’t think this is a game of 19-dimensional chess either.

I dont think there is any question where this administration is headed. They are in fact headed on a straight line, there is no question of that. They cannot wait to get to the endgame. All the talk is just blather, bright shiny thing to distract, not chaos.

  9. pandora says:

I did say deliberate chaos. And it’s a good thing Republicans are easily distracted by bright, shiny objects. 😉

  10. farsider says:

The country as a whole is distracted by bright, shiny objects. It ain’t one party or the other in that case. Unfortunately if it isn’t the story of the hour it just doesn’t exist. It is no way to run a country.

  11. callerRick says:

It seems chaotic because it is. They haven’t got a clue. Chief White House economic advisor Summers; the stimulus will work “within weeks.” Yeah, riiiight. Biden; we “underestimated” the recession. Really. Underestimated? For six months, you compared it to the Great Depression. Of course, what could you expect from a man who’s never run as much as a lemonaide stand?

    BO…..One-and-Done.

You were convinced that McCain would win in a walk… Maybe baseless, partisan predictions aren’t your bag.

  13. callerRick says:

“You were convinced that McCain would win in a walk….”

I predicted, from the very beginning, that McCain couldn’t win. …no matter who the Democrat candidate was (and won a bet on WGMD in so doing). Try having some idea of what you’re talking about before you mouth-off.

    Moderate Republicans usually lose.
