Carney’s Fundraising Garners ‘Pleasant Surprise’ Nod from DKos

Filed in Delaware by on July 19, 2009

Steve Singiser’s Daily Kos featured blog on candidate fundraising gives props to John Carney’s efforts for the quarter ending June 3o:

4. John Carney (Democrat/DE-AL)–$262K Raised, $235K On Hand
Carney is potentially a challenger to longtime Republican incumbent Mike Castle. Carney more than doubled Castle’s modest ($125K) take, leading many to now speculate that Castle is on the verge of announcing his retirement. If Castle does elect to leave the House, Carney will have amenable territory (Delaware went 62% for Barack Obama), and a huge cash advantage.

Everyone would do well to remember that this seat, once flipped, is unlikely to find its way back into the Rethugs’ column any time soon.  And Carney is more of a real Democrat than Tom Carper ever was. Maybe not the progressive DL might desire, but not the Blue Dog D who’s the Bankers’ Best Friend either.

Just saw a message on Facebook, where Carney is looking for volunteers to help staff a booth or something at the State Fair.

Here is the OpenSecrets summary of the current state of fundraising. It surprises me that Scott Spencer is reporting nothing so far. Looking at the detail, though, Castle’s fundraising seems to consist of collecting checks from the usual suspects he has been collecting from forever. Carney has two major contributions from two unions and the rest from individuals. That is really interesting to me. Perhaps the institutional money is waiting to see who ends up running what races?

After you’ve watched Spencer for a while, his failure to report any fund-raising becomes unsurprising. He’s not formed a committee. He’s not raised any money.

Five tax liens have been filed against him. He owes some civilians money too. Things don’t look promising for a real candidacy to materialize.

  3. Spencer seems like a nice guy but I’ve seen him speak twice and I think he needs a lot more polish if he hopes to be a candidate.

I’ve seen Spencer a few times, too, and have not been impressed. Personally, I think he’s a nice guy, but should set his sights lower (county council, Leg Hall) before running for Congress. I thought his rocket launch idea for his candidacy was a waste of time.

  5. Maybe the rocket launch wouldn’t have been a waste of time had he used it to, you know, launch his campaign. A gimmick like that w/o visible followup is just a gimmick, and makes the candidate look like gimmicks is all he/she has.

  6. I agree ‘Bulo. I think it is hard for non-big name candidates to get attention so I think a rocket launch is a cute and clever idea, but you have to follow up with substance.

That and the whistle stop campaign through the 4 counties (he invented “Blogger County” for his announcement). I just don’t see much there.

    Blogger County?

    Where the heck is that?

  9. MJ says:

Probably somewhere in the middle of the canal. He wanted to do something just for bloggers so he invented Blogger County.

  10. anon says:

    It’s in area code 800.

  11. cassandra m says:

    Oy.

I don’t even think we were invited to that County….

  12. How can you have blogger county and not invite bloggers? Fail!
