Good Thing Stephen Hawking Doesn’t Live In The U.K. – Except He Does
This is really becoming tiresome. (Via TPM)
AJC columnist Jay Bookman noticed that in the latest Investors Business Daily editorial about how the ‘death panel’ will condemn all handicapped or disabled people to death on some horrid wind-swept mountain, it notes that …
People such as scientist Stephen Hawking wouldn’t have a chance in the U.K., where the National Health Service would say the life of this brilliant man, because of his physical handicaps, is essentially worthless.Needless to say, Hawking, who is recognized as one of the great theoretical physicists of the 20th and 21st century, was born in the UK and has lived his entire life there.
Hello? Ever heard of Google? Not that it will matter to the mobs. Geez, if they get wind of this they will claim Hawking’s an American Citizen and develop another conspiracy theory stating that Obama deliberately destroyed Hawking’s birth certificate and had him deported to England.
You have no idea how much I wish I were joking.

And probably written by a creationist, too.
Interestingly, Hawking has ALS and was diagnosed at a very young age — and did not expect to live long enough to finish his Ph.D. He is getting ready to retire I think and he has lived well beyond expectations under socialized health care.
They thought that he was American because he didn’t have a British accent…
Think about it.
He’s in the UK? Good Lord, let’s get him to America so he can get a decent education.
LOL, LG! Soooo true.
It’s this sort of stupidity and laziness from the “pull yourself up from your bootstraps” party that infuriates me. The fact they don’t realize they’re stupid is what frightens me.
And as far as our education system… no matter how many hours they spend in school do the children of these people really stand a chance?
Wife and I were on vacation in the Poconos last week had ended up having dinner with two couples from Canada, one from Montreal and one from Quebec. Both couples had nothing but praise for their health system. And one of the couples were in their mid-fifties, and lots of parts in their bodies had started to break down 🙂 That couple used their health care extensively and were quite happy with it.
Both couples were quite annoyed at they way their health care is sometimes portrayed in America. Their most telling quote :” It’s a shame you don’t have our system for your health care”
You’re right, Mark. Whenever I’ve seen polls from other evil, socialist countries like Canada or the UK, their health-care systems are usually quite popular. Same thing with the single-payer (Medicare) and nationalized (VA) systems we already have here. But remember the Right’s motto — “Don’t let the facts get in the way of a good fear-mongering”.
Many of the supporters on the right have never left their home states. They haven’t been to a country with socialized medicine and they don’t need to, thankyouverymuch. Perhaps when we have the re-education camps, we can put them in France. 🙂
Oh and for the humor-impaired, that was a joke.
“humor-impaired”
donviti wouldza uzed a different word fo sho!
Shows you what liberalgeek knows. Everyone knows the Camps are in the Northwest. But I think we might be sending the some of rounded-up guns to France. You know, to help them kill their old people.
I agree. Most of these tea baggers have no world view.
I am Canadian…landed on your website because I wanted to google this outrageous article in IBD. Hawking lives in England! What are the nut-jobs in America smoking, and where can I get some?
Our healthcare system is GREAT. The nutjobs in America found ONE canadian who HAD LOTS OF MONEY to make a commercial for you all bad-mouthing our healthcare up here. Let me tell you the backlash she got at home…she apologizes for saying all that too and said the editors did a lot to make it seem even worse (good cutting does a lot for perception).
Sure American health care is among the best in the world…if you HAVE LOTS OF MONEY. If you don’t, then you are S-O-L (sh*t outta luck).
Thanks henry. And for the record, Americans invented the phrase S-O-L. 🙂
Another favorite argument they love to use is that this will lead to total socialism, interesting that this same argument was used in 1935 about social security. It must be hard to sleep at night when the ghost of uncle Joe Stalin is hiding under your bed.
Henry, do you have a link for the apology by that Canadian woman?
“Another favorite argument they love to use is that this will lead to total socialism”
and yet as the march towards socialism obviously continues you remain in denial. You are right – first Social Security – remove investable funds from your citizens and spend them instead on todays government issue. Then assume control of healtcare – emergency healthcare at first then the eldery = Medicare and Medicaid, then everyone. It really is that simple and yet you know it, can see it and will still deny it. That is a shame.
Your paranoia is frighting farsider, the noted economist Joseph schumpeter wrote that for capitilism to work best a social safty net is needed in regards to health care and retirement. Every other industrilized nation has headed his advise, but not us. So for that reason will be playing a losing game of catch up in the global economy. Your no doubt sure that Obama is in on a communist plot to ship us all to the gulag. conspiracy theorys abound on the web, they never amount to anything. So don,t warn me about my impending doom, I know what,s going on, it,s called affordable health care for everyone
I believe we have several social safety nets. I do not believe it is either in our governments powers nor interest to expand to mandatory health insurance for all. I belive it is intended to and will in short order achieve a full single payer system. In the end it will be a no payer system. I can see it. You can too. To each according to their needs from each according to their ability. It is an evil system, it should and must be stopped.
how cute…you “believe”
well, based on the idiotic comments you have laid out over the past 24 hours I believe that what you believe is wrong and a crock of shit.
but keep coming back and getting slapped around.
gop in a nutshell. flat wrong on the facts & trying to bs some kind of explanation for why up is really down
No facts wrong here, read the bill, it is long and scary. Just pay attention. Watch the undeniable expansion of government and remember government acts are never what they say
The patriot act was anything but patriotic. Health care reform is in no way what it is title.
Just another caution on our heath care system, we have the highest deathe rate of people between the ages of 50 and 60 in the world, in tonights obits 8 of the 29 are between 50 and 60. Reason, they put off important check-ups because of the high cost and no insurance coverage. So if you are approaching that age group relocate to another country.
I just. Don’t. Get. It. Are we all living on the same planet? And the worst part, I can just imagine people nodding in earnest agreement as they are fed all this mis-to the point of ridiculousness-information.
And, 12% of self-identified Republican NC voters don’t believe or are not sure that a place called “Hawaii” is a part of the United States. Niiiiiiiiice. Help me, jeebus. Help. Me.
Hey, just thought I’d mention as a disabled guy living in the UK just like Stephen Hawking (but crap at theoretical physics). I wouldn’t be here either without a national healthcare system ….
But I’m confused. I can’t understand what all this argument is all about. Free healthcare is not about socialism, its more to do with humanity surely?
Heard of the Good Samaritan?
Suppose he was on the left side of the road …mmm?
Our Tories are called Republicans… and they are armed.
Editor,
money and power, it isn’t about anything else.
