What America Do The idiots want back?
We all know that many of the folks against health care seem to be saying that they want America Back. My questions is what America do they want back?
Do they want the Vietname Era America Back?
The Nixon America?
The WWI and/or WWII America?
The Great Depression?
Any one of the dozen or so other Recessions?
Rationed gas?
Iran Contra America?
1920’s under Prohibition?
the 50,60’s and 70’s and the cold war?
The america where we thought ducking under our desks would save us from a nuclear holocaust?
The Pre Civil Rights America? especially in the South?
How about before Women’s Suffrage?
I know, interment camp America!
Wait, the America that Unions built, giving us 40 hour work week, retirment benefits, paid vacation, health benefits…wait, no, Unions are evil
How about the America before the great depression when there was no OSHA
I could go on, but my assumption is that the America the idiots saying they want back only exists on TV Land.
As always a liberal view which shows a hatred for Americans who have a different viewpoint but an endless love for government.
Save the anti union stuff, I support collective bargaining.
You forget this country is great not because of the size and breadth of government or size of the budget but the sum of our individual efforts.
Many of the people who are community organizing (it is only cool when Obama does it?) don’t like the exponential growth of government debt and scope. None of them is saying throw out government but certainly work with me and stop taking so much money from me.
Mike Protack
I’ll take “limited government America”. You know — back when the powers of the federal government were properly seen as only those enumerated in the document.
RwR – what year was that?
It sure wasn’t the last eight… when debt and deficits didn’t matter.
The Jefferson Administration.
lol…I will go ahead and assume you are white at this point…
RwR longing for the really old days. Nice.
Who needs the FDA?
Assume whatever you want — imperfect as America was at that time, at least the Constitution was followed. Give me an America run on Jeffersonian principles without slavery and I will be perfectly happy.
How does the Lousisanna Purchase fit in to RwR’s thinking? I think he just wants to go back to the days of slavery.
Like I said, you are obviously white.
Of course, RwR would have been up in arms about rampant spending on the Louisiana Purchase and following on of the crazy Lewis and Clark Expedition.
So this country, since the Jefferson Administration, has not been the country you love? Has not been a country worth saving? Has not been a country of Real Americans (TM-Palin)?
I won’t bother “enumerating” what the Constitution was like for far more than 50% of us un-real americans back under the Jefferson Administration. But I’ll assume you are white and male. And you own your own horse.
America, baby: love it or leave it!
Assume whatever you want — imperfect as America was at that time, at least the Constitution was followed. Give me an America run on Jeffersonian principles without slavery and I will be perfectly happy.
It really is a remarkable statement that this almighty whitey puts out there. If you can’t find the incredibly stupid hypocritical statement in this person statements allow me to help you.
The constitution was followed + plus Slavery = the constitution being followed.
teh awesome!
Two words: Whiskey Rebellion.
We want the America without you, DV. Is that too much to ask?
The other thing that is funny is that basically, unless you helped write the Constitution, RwR doesn’t think that you can follow it.
ahhhh, attack the messenger.
Jefferson financed the Lewis and Clark expedition — this should have been privately financed!!! No need for gov’t money to be spent on this.
Right. I am certain that private corporations would have loved to have L&C go on a search for things to exploit.
Nemski — the Whiskey Rebellion happened under George Washington.
And liberalgeek — Jefferson was not even in the country at the time of the Constitutional Convention. He was the our ambassador to France at the time, and took no part in the writing of the document or the subsequent debates. Indeed, he did not even return to the country until after he had been made our nation’s first Secretary of State.
And Delaware’s Stupidest Blogger — notice, please, that I qualified my answer to overcome the slavery objection.
DV makes a good point. I want TV Land back. Back to the William Windom, as a Senator when he respected “The Farmer’s Daughter”, and married her. That’s a good start. Yes, bring that TV Land back, and maybe we’ll all start acting better, instead of “Girls Gone Wild”, and “Rehab”.
The America we want back is the one where we don’t have to read inane drivel like this article. You know, an America where articles have some central focus rather than a galaxy of obfuscatory imagery. Left, right – I almost don’t care – please though, stop writing doodoo articles like this.
Yes, I do know that the Whiskey Rebellion occurred during the Washington Administration, but it was an egregious display of federal gov’t power still the same.
I notice that you don’t comment on the Purchase or L&C or slavery.
rationaljew, we’re not making you read this you dumbshit. Just leave.
notice, please, that I qualified my answer to overcome the slavery objection
Then you’ve nullified your own point. Following the Constitution as it existed in the Jefferson Presidency depends on cherry-picking the amendments you like from the ones it suits you to ignore. A position that has the whiff of “living document” about it — especially since killing off a few amendments you don’t like lets you pretend to some Constitutional purity.
Your vision, then, would exclude women from voting apparently. And let Presidents be free of term limits.
nemski, the obama team pays me 14/hour to ‘monitor’ sites. so here i am, monitoring. it sure beats working at ralph’s grocery for the summer. and besides, you sir, are a carpet bagger.
LOL. That sure is rational. But I’m not sure why Nemski is a carpetbagger. Does Tom Carper pay you on the side to use that word on the blogs to lessen its effectiveness as an insult?
RwR – Yes, you are correct. My bad, Jefferson was out of the country and largely a spectator for the Constitutional Convention.
rj, whatever.
yea, don’t sweat it. i’m just having some fun. now i have to go cook dinner. uuuff!
Thank you, Mr. Viti,
for the most compelling poetry prompt
I have received from anyone, anywhere,
for quite some time now (good prompts
for writing are, imho, hard to come by).
Words to come.
PS – would you consider taking a poem on here as an answer?
Donviti is partial to the limerick.
I have the worst timing;
with a writing prompt like this,
I know for sure I picked the wrong year
to retire from the slam.
I’m all for having our constitution as it is now — but simply following it a Jeffersonian manner, which means that the words mean what they say and that we have a truly LIMITED government as under Jefferson.
Notice, I expanded my argument to say that i want to apply Jeffersonian principles.
The Van Buren era.
Bastardized Jeffersonian ideals sprinkled with the capitulation of intolerance.
So where were you LIMITED government guys when Bush was expanding the government, getting into foreign entanglements, vacuuming up all our communications, and blowing off subpoenas? If ever there was s time for conservatives to start waving Hitler posters it was then, not now.
Gee, VC — sounds like just about any era since Jackson in which the Democrats have been in charge.
keep bringing the dumbass anon.
Sorry, anon — for a liberal to complain about the waving of Hitler posters is absurd. You folks have done it with every GOP president of my lifetime, virtually draining the comparison of any meaning.
Sort of like you folks are doing today with the claim of racism — when everything is racism, it just lacks meaning.
Sorry, anon — for a liberal to complain about the waving of Hitler posters is absurd.
Who’s complaining? I’m just saying – if you wanted some limited-government credibility, it should have been your kooks rather than our kooks protesting Bush.
I’m pretty sure they want the time of Cholera back, given their fear of publically available health care (that won’t drive you bankrupt – but if it does, thanks to Carper and the GOP, prepare to lose everything you own).
“You folks”? Are we all identical to you?
The Louisiana Purchase was condemned because of the fear that new states (each with two Senators) might include a lot of slave states. The people making the deal had originally been sent to buy just New Orleans but the ‘fire sale’ deal was too good to resist.
The ‘foolish spending’ complaint was more in earnest over the purchase of Alaska.
Our ending of slavery was inevitable and the wheels were set in motion by the Constitution. Political reality made instant abolition impractical but total abolition was the goal.
Note that the end of the War of 1812 marked the virtual end of the Federalist Party. It lingered longest in Delaware. Then we had only one National party for a while until Jackson created a split. Only one avowed Federalist was elected president.
“ahhhh, attack the messenger.”
Just his ego. You’re not a messenger for any cause or issue other than abject stupidity. In which case, good job! You’re batting 1000
Every sword thrust at my ego only hardens it.
I think you’re confusing that with eggs and your arteries.
How about the independent, stand on your own two feet America, where people would be aghast at the prospect of lining-up to be on the public dole?
Dependency is a ring through the nose; suitable for cattle, not men.
When did that ever happen Rick? Please, refer me to that eutopia in Years. 19– or 18– or even 17–
what does that actually mean in today’s world, this “stand on your own two feet”?
slogans are not substitutes for intelligence.
what does that actually mean in today’s world, this “stand on your own two feet”?
It means provide for yourself, and your family, and don’t ask others to do it for you. Simple.
