We get wacky visitors here all the time talking about how Christmas is under fire, or that liberals are trying to take God out of everything… Then this.
North Carolina’s constitution is clear: politicians who deny the existence of God are barred from holding office.
Opponents of Cecil Bothwell are seizing on that law to argue he should not be seated as a City Council member today, even though federal courts have ruled religious tests for public office are unlawful under the U.S. Constitution.
This guy has said that he does not believe in the existence of God. For that offense, some of the slack-jawed yokels in North Carolina are saying that he cannot hold public office. The part that really irked me (and rang a small bell in my head) was this line:
“I’m not saying that Cecil Bothwell is not a good man, but if he’s an atheist, he’s not eligible to serve in public office, according to the state constitution,” said H.K. Edgerton, a former Asheville NAACP president.
So, Mr. Edgerton is saying that the NC state constitution says he is ineligible, so what are you gonna do??? I got news for ya, Mr Edgerton, it wasn’t all that long ago that many people in the NAACP were ineligible to hold office due to their skin color, their property ownership or their reading level. And it pisses me off when assholes pull the ladder up behind them.
