Chris Matthews – The New Harry Reid?
One of the biggest WTF moments of the night was Chris Matthews reaction to Obama’s speech.
Chris Matthews offered a strange analysis of President Obama’s State of the Union address on MSNBC: “I forgot he was black tonight.”
“I was trying to think about who he was tonight, and it’s interesting,” Matthews said. “He is post racial by all appearances, you know. Y’know, I forgot he was black tonight for an hour. He’s gone a long way to become a leader of this country and past so much history in just a year or two.”
Was he supposed to be giving a compliment because I couldn’t tell.

I don,t get it is being black a bad thing?
I’m with you FBH. I have no idea what Matthews is trying to say here.
Lets not forget folks it was Mathews who was the first one to inject Race into the primaries in NH and then tried to blame it on Clinton’s people.
Yeah, Matthews kept referring to Obama as post racial. And I thought to myself…I am not even thinking in racial terms to mention it. So why is Matthews mentioning it? We are obviously not post racial if you have to mention that the President is post racial.
literally threw down my knitting and was like “WHAT??”
-although I can’t stand Matthews. Why do you bother having guests on your show if you’re going to spend the whole time yelling over them? If the guest doens’t fit his prepared narrative of how the interview goes, he just yells that narrative until the guest gives up.
Yeah, Matthews kept referring to Obama as post racial.
“The Audacity Of Taupe”
I caught that, too. My first thought was, “Listening to Chris Matthews, I forgot for a few minutes that he’s an idiot. OK, that’s done.”
Why is no one commenting about Olberman’s ridiculous word choice? If a Republican had used the phrase “serving two masters” about Obama, they would have been crushed by the media…and rightfully so.
haha which is why i seem to find myself increasingly watching just Rachel now more and more….
but Desmond, probably nobody noticed (Actually I watched Olberman last night and didn’t)because Matthews’ was crazier.
Desmond: Probably nobody made a stink (excluding you, of course) because it’s a Biblical reference, and has nothing to do with slavery.
Matthew 6:24 (New International version):
“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”
A verse most conservatives skip over, of course, which is why your whine “if a Republican used the phrase…” is pure speculation. A Republican would literally never quote this verse.
On the other hand, I don’t care that Obama is black. That Matthews and others apparently do speaks loudly about their latent racial prejudices and demons.
LOL, weren’t you the guy defending Pat Robertson and the NRO guy’s defense of slavery for Haiti?
No. I didn’t do either.
I said Robertson’s comment was stupid and inappropriate, though it apparently was based loosely upon some actual historical incident. I also pointed out that Robertson’s organization was not only raising significant money and sending significant relief to help Haiti in the wake of the earthquake, but it had also been doing relief work in Haiti for decades while most of those expressing outrage over his comments were ignoring the plight of the Haitian people.
On the other issue, I said that Krikorian made an interesting argument about the impact of slavery and colonization on the nations of the Caribbean and that I thought it might be interesting to know if there were some positives that came out of those twin evils. I also suggested that Krikorian might have a point about Haiti needing extraordinary measures taken to help with both the recovery from the earthquake and the decades of malgovernance — and that his “trust territory under a mandate granted to the OAS” proposal might have some merit.
Both of which differ dramatically from your characterization.
i’m no fan of chris matthews’, but i think he may have been trying to say that it was the first time he thought of him as the president instead of (the first) black president. in other words, he was color blind for the first time while watching an obama speech.
i think it was meant to be an observation (a positive one) rather than a compliment. why must everything be a compliment or an insult in leftyland?
um… no. it was just a dumb comment to make. And revealing that as much as Obama makes his leg tingle Matthews is just another racist Irish guy from south philly.
it’s positive to not see someone as black…. aka being black is negative. gotcha dom…. thanks for clearing that up….teabag
