Snowed In Wednesday Open Thread

Filed in National by on February 10, 2010

Well, I guess we all should have plenty of time for blogging today since we’re snowed in. So, here is a fresh open thread for you to play in.

Ezra Klein on the Republicans’s health care reform ransom note:

Just screams “we would like to cooperate with you to reform the American health-care system,” doesn’t it? But don’t take my word for it: You’ll really want to read the whole thing. These are not folks who concern themselves with the appearance of good faith. The only thing missing is an obscure riddle that Obama must answer before he can speak to Mitch McConnell.

But I think the administration should release a counter-proposal. They will agree to literally every one of the GOP’s demands — including the ones that don’t make any sense — in return for one, simple promise: The final legislation is guaranteed an up-or-down vote in the House and the Senate. No filibusters. No delays. No procedural tricks. If the GOP wants a clean process, I bet a deal can be struck here.

I think we all know this will never happen, but perhaps calling their bluff will be a good way to highlight the Republican obstructionism.

Republicans have also painted themselves into a corner concerning the Christmas undiebomber. They started objecting to putting Abdulmutallab through the civilian courts even though they never objected with other terrorism suspects, including Richard Reid. In fact, John Brennan, Deputy National Security Advisor, wrote an op-ed for USA Today taking Republicans to task for their lies and distortions on the case. That hasn’t stopped the GOP from continuing the attack, no matter how nonsensical. TPM catches Gingrich lying about the similarities of the Reid and Abdulmutallab cases on the Daily Show.

Classic moment last night on The Daily Show when Newt Gingrich explained that it was okay to mirandize “shoe bomber” Richard Reid and not Christmas Day bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab because Reid, unlike Abdulmutallab, is a US citizen.

Only, of course, Reid is a British citizen. Watch the video here.

What was so classic about this to me isn’t that Gingrich got a fact wrong. That happens, though to some more than others. But it was a larger illustration of how much Republicans are flailing to find any ‘fact’ to plug in to explain why the Abdulmutallab arrest was an outrage even though it went down just like every other arrest of a terrorist on American soil in like forever.

Oh my…just got the call. All Red Clay schools closed remainder of the week. Ugh…

  2. Jason330 says:

Bring Howard Dean back the DNC.

    http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2010/2/10/835623/-The-chairmanship-of-the-Democratic-National-Committee-is-the-wrong-job-for-him.

The Chairmanship of the DNC is too important of a job to leave to people from Virginia.

  3. I’m not surprised that schools close for the rest of the week. I’ll bet roads won’t really be passable until Friday.

Anyone taking bets on how long the State of Emergency lasts? I’ll say until noon tomorrow.

Liberalgeek is reporting on Twitter that he’s lost power. Please stay on electricity!

  4. nemski says:

Brandywine School District is closed for Thursday.

  5. pandora says:

Brandywine School District just called to cancel school for tomorrow.

I’m so sorry, LG! I really don’t want to lose power. Mr. Pandora is out of the country, and while the kids are enjoying this right now that would probably change if we had to spend the night in the dark with no heat. Fingers crossed!

  6. Jason330 says:

    Nemski,

I’ll take the over if the betting line is noon. Suck about LG. I, for one, love electricity.

  7. meatball says:

I don’t think there was ever any question that the schools in Sussex would be closed through Tuesday. The back roads are practically untouched since the weekend storm. The only plow that came down our public road came on Saturday midway through the storm. Glad I don’t have to go in until Friday.

12 plows for 800+ miles of roads. But hey, I’m not complaining. What would we do with more plows the other 10 non-snowy years?

  8. nemski says:

    meatball agreed.

  9. Mark H says:

Down here in Dover we’re getting the brunt of the wind now….I’d say the State of Emergency will last until tomorrow at 10:00. If I wanted to shovel right now I couldn’t (and I don’t really want to anyhow 🙂

Even if this snow wasn’t here today, I’m sure that there are many developments that bus drivers wouldn’t want to venture into.

I’m with meatball and nemski with the plows.

  14. nemski says:

Brian if you want to get into shape, come up to North Wilmington and shovel me out.

  15. Jason330 says:

That video is nausea inducing. My flat(ish) 10,000 sq ft roof is 8 miles from there.

It’s a wonder no one has thought to just move the Winter Olympics to here, really.

  17. MJ says:

just got back from playing with the dog outside (she wanted to go). Very windy, snowy – we’ve gotten about 6 more inches down here. I’ve over it.

  26. Suzanne says:

I am thinking of all those steep streets in Wilmington – anybody tried downhill skiing or skijumping yet?

  27. meatball says:

I spoke too soon. Three giant combine type farm tractors just when down the road I live on. They deposited a round snowball that comes up to my nipple line smack dab in the center of my driveway egress. It couldn’t have been more perfectly placed even if they had a guy out there with a tape measure.

I used a garden spade and went all ninja warrior on. Now that was fun.

  28. a.price says:

awww tom! so cute. SHHHHHHH don’t anyone tell him there is more to the planet than the mid atlantic US!!! his small conservative brain might not be able to handle it!

  29. Mark H says:

    Meatball, you’re welcome 🙂

  30. Tom S says:

a.price-you’re slowing down. 10 minutes before you insulted me. Must be that beer.

  31. a.price says:

sorry to deny you your validation Tom. I know you come here for the ridicule and stay for the humiliation. but i was in fact doin stuff.

  32. Delaware Dem says:

Conservatives only think in logical fallacies. Because it is the only way their world makes sense. To them, global warming means it can never snow again on the planet anywhere. For they see the word warming and think everything just gets warm. They lack the requisite brain cells to understand that global warming changes the climate, and thus gives places like Washington, DC three blizzards in one year when they are only supposed to get one blizzard every 15 years.

This snow is just proof that global warming exists, rather than proving it does not exist. But their little minds cannot get beyond the “warming” part.

  33. Tom S says:

a.price-4 minutes. Better pop another one!

  34. MJ says:

Channel 10 just had a cute video of a calf that was born during the blizzard. They named her Snowflake.

  35. I like snownami. I’ll add it to the poll.

  36. pandora says:

Global warming has a lot to do with added moisture in the air which leads to bigger storms. But that’s just some of that icky science.

  37. ray k says:

Just close your eyes and imagine it,s memorial day weekend and your all packed to go to the beach but you can,t because it,s still snowing.

  38. Jason330 says:

Stuck in an ACME store line this morning behind some dumbass saying that the storm proves that Al Gore is a fool. The cashier said “the weather sure is bad…the climate is what I’m worried about”.

the guy had no idea that he was totally pwnd by an ACME cashier. You have to feel sorry for these simple minded goofs.

  39. nemski says:

One of the things that confuses me about the Republican hatred of science is that capitalism would be dead without science.

  40. a.price says:

well, the bible make knowledge a sin. maybe that is the driving fore behind Tom and Palin’s love of ignorance.

  41. Tom S says:

Keep name calling and stereotyping…1 hr, 19 minutes, better slow down on the beer

  42. Delaware Dem says:

Tom, we are intolerant of your intolerance. You are an anti-science fool who in earlier times would be known as the village idiot.

  43. MJ says:

Is Tom S Downlow David’s bf?

  44. The power is out at my house.

  45. pandora says:

    Oh no, UI! I’m sorry.

  46. pandora says:

City plowing our streets now! Only problem… they’re piling the snow into mountains (at least 10′ high) on every corner sidewalk and burying parked cars behind a wall of snow.

  47. a.price says:

Tom, why are you so obsessed with the idea of me having a couple cold ones? Am i gonna have to put up with this crap every time i make a valid point against one of your insane arguments? you tell me how long i was doing something other than thinking about you and blame beer? Because that is a real pathetic sad cry for attention.

almost an hour… i know you missed me you lonely lonely wingnut.
(pst…. i was helping people shovel)
    teabag.

  48. cassandra_m says:

Sorry UI….hope they get your power back without much wait.

  49. aqc says:

Jason…my son is an Acme cashier and smarter that any of the republicans I know!

  50. Brian Shields says:

Nemski, you’d be snowed in until June. I tweaked my back on the last storm and and only push around about 20 shovels full every so often before I have to rest. Hardly cardiovascular.

Didn’t help that my roommate didn’t help. All of the sudden that fucker has a bad back and hasn’t touched a shovel. Bastard.

I should throw all of the snow against the garage door where his car is and leave for work.

  51. Suzanne says:

Hey DD – we still ca ’em village idiots – and a.price – he probaby wishes he could have one. So you should enjoy yours AND show him the middle finger while drinking.

  52. Delaware Dem says:

Unstable Isotope’s power is back on. I think she lives in Pike Creek or Newark.

  53. I’m back! I’m in Newark. Delmarva Power told us that our power outage affected 500 homes.

  54. Miscreant says:

Welcome back! My power outage only lasted a mere 65 hours. However, I did see my first snow plow today.

    It was a good day.

  55. Delaware Dem says:

Miscreant wins this round. He should enjoy it since he always loses the political rounds. 😉

  56. Miscreant says:

I still in shock from the last year of this administration…

  57. Yes, 3 hours isn’t much suffering.
