Weekend Foodie Post — 50 Things Every Foodie Should Try
This was talked about on A Chef’s Table this morning, talking to the author Pim Techamuanvivit who has a new book called Foodie Handbook: The Almost Definitive Guide To Gastronomy.
I’ve included a screen capture of the 50 things here. But here are the top 10:
1. Go native
2. Eat a whole roasted turbot on the Basque coast of Spain
3. Eat a fugu
4. Give up trying to like something you hate
5. Try a durian
6. Dine at a Parisian three-star restaurant
7. Eat a perfect peach
8. Try a stinky cheese
9. Find your signature dish
10.Try khao chae, in Bangkok, at the height of summer
Of this list, the ones I can check off are: 1,3,7,8,12,15,16,17,19,21,22,26,31,33,38,39,40,42,43,46,50. 9 is a strange one since I keep changing my signature dish and 27 is a non-starter since I’m allergic.
Cool list! Which ones have you done? Any thoughts on foodie experiences that should be here? There’s no bacon anywhere on here, you know….

This is a cool list. I haven’t done many: #4, #8, #15, #17, #21, #39. Heh, we were talking about #50 for Free Radical’s 40th b-day.
You should do it! Roast pig is fun and excellent party food. You can get nice ones (not too big) in spots in Chinatown in Philly. My brother and I are planning roast pig for next Christmas — we had to promise his wife that we would not destroy her house or her yard to do it, though…..
And not a single suggestion involving SPAM?
Hey hey!
I stumbled across a foodie website yesterday that I’m enjoying. David Lebovitz, formerly the pastry chef at Chez Pannise, is living in Paris and having a wonderful time. He even has a recipe for bacon ice cream. Ya might want to check it out at:
http://www.davidlebovitz.com/
I ate a can of aged sardines, but by accident.
Many of these happen in Paris. I would add to the list. Split a couple bottles of cheap red wine a baguette, some good cheese and a spicy dry Italian salami with some friends on the steps of the Basilique Du Sacré-Cœur De Montmartre.
Rebecca,
David Lebovitz is an absolute GOD. His Perfect Scoop ice cream cookbook is amazing and a highly-recommended read. Re: bacon ice cream: head over to Sweet Lucy’s on 202. I tried it for the first time Friday night was blown away at just how good it was.
Thanks for the tip Mike, I’ll make a point of finding Sweet Lucy’s on my next expedition to Trader Joes.
So what are the “Top Ten Delaware Things Every Foodie Should Try?”
We have one nominee.
Bacon ice cream: Sweet Lucy’s on 202
I’ll add Muskrat at the Wagon Wheel in Smyrna.
Burger and shake at the Charcoal Pit.
Sunday Brunch at the Green Room at the Hotel Dupont.
Nice idea, Jason!
Helen’s Sausage House, definitely!
A scrapple sandwich (with cheese) from the Harbeson Deli on U.S. 9.
Fish & chips or shepherd’s pie (the toffee pudding is a mandatory dessert) from Go Fish in Rehoboth Beach.
Caramel popcorn from Dolle’s on the Boardwalk.
A barbecue sandwich from Mista B’s in Bear. He is only open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in the summer, but get the BBQ with some greens and a piece of sweet potato pie.
Attend a wine (or beer, or whiskey) dinner at Caffe Gelato in Newark.
I’m 5 for 10 on the DE list as it stands so far.
Helen’s Sausage House. Yes
A barbecue sandwich from Mista B’s in Bear. Nope
Bacon ice cream: Sweet Lucy’s on 202. Nope
Muskrat at the Wagon Wheel in Smyrna. Yes.
Burger and shake at the 202 Charcoal Pit. Yes
Sunday Brunch at the Green Room at the Hotel Dupont. Yes
A scrapple sandwich (with cheese) from the Harbeson Deli on U.S. 9. No
Fish & chips or shepherd’s pie, toffee pudding dessert from Go Fish in Rehoboth Beach. Yes
Caramel popcorn from Dolle’s on the Boardwalk. Oddly. No.
Attend a wine (or beer, or whiskey) dinner at Caffe Gelato in Newark. No.
Something from Jessops Tavern or The Arsenal ought to be on here, I think….
Enjoy a fruit crisp from Jessop’s Tavern! There ya go. They are always DAMN good.
Actually, I think Jessop’s does cobblers. I always get the two mixed up. Cobbler vs. crisp vs. buckle vs. crumble. Good pick, cass! Jessop’s is always a good time. I’ve taken out-of-town guests there and they’re always bowled over by the coziness of the place.
Speaking of food, major props to Mike Matthews for meeting his weight-loss goal (almost 160 pounds!!!). That is truly an amazing accomplishment, a feat that very few people who attempt it can actually achieve. Congratulations, Mike; it says a lot about your self-discipline and character. Now keep it off!
A sub from Casapullas, w/ a Tastykake for dessert
