He Was For It Before He Was Against It

Filed in National by on March 27, 2010

As you might have read, President Obama has finally pushed through some recess appointments. Republicans are “upset”. John McCain said he was “very disappointed” and:

Once again the administration showed that it had little respect for the time honored constitutional roles and procedures of Congress

Let’s take the Hot Tub Time Machine back to 2005 when Bush was thinking of pushing John Bolton through on a recess recess appointment. Gee, I wonder what McCain said then:

I would support it. It’s the president’s prerogative.

Once again, Republicans prove my theory that if President Obama discovered a cure for cancer, the GOP would find fault with the discovery.

You beat me to this, Nemski.

Dumbya made 170 recess appointments during his 2 terms. I don’t recall hearing McCain or the other rethuglicans complaining when he did it.

Bush used to make recess appointments practically while Harry Reid was in the men’s room. Reid used to have to keep the Senate open in pro-forma session during breaks by having Jim Webb (who lived nearby) give up his vacation and stay on the floor by himself, just to keep Bush from appointing a bunch of nutjobs.

Remember — this was one of those things that you and your party declared was “shredding the Constitution” when Bush did it. Are you so lacking in integrity that you will support it now?

I agree that recess appointments are regretful, no matter which party holds the White House.

I further note that the minority party’s stranglehold on the US Senate this session, through the daily use of the cloture/fillibuster, is disgraceful. If the Democratic Party did it as much in the past or future, I would also note my disappointment.

Recess appointments are bad form, however the business of the country cannot be responsibly be run (not that Republicans appear to care about this) when appointments are on perpetual hold due to petulant Senators, whom the country have democratically relegated to minority status.

  6. Jason330 says:

Recess appointments are not bad form, but part of the process. If the minority finds an appointment abhorrent they have a remedy at the ballot box. Democrats used that avenue to address George Bush’s abuse of power.

What cry baby Republicans don’t get is that we live in a democracy. Elections have consequences.

  7. McCain is still a favorite on Sunday shows but he’s becoming increasingly irrelevant. I read that at the rally that Palin appeared at, the news channels covered Palin’s speech but cut away when McCain started to speak. Now we just need to convince the media that Palin is irrelevant too.

You have to love this from the comments section of the News Journal:

This Becker guy was voted down by the Senate 52-43 last month, and gets a recess appointment anyway.

These Marxists really don’t give a damn what anyone else thinks.

Let’s take the time machine back to where “He was for it before he was against it” originated…both parties pull this nonsense.

Q: What do you call it when Republicans push through a more radical than proposed agenda after “winning” an election by a few dimpled chads in Florida?

    A: Democracy

Q: What do you call it when Democrats move forward with their agenda after winning an election by huge majorities all around?

    A: Tyranny
