Morning Round Em Up
Good Morning Delaware Liberals. Wow, what a news day yesterday. So busy that we did not have much time for national news. So let’s catch up.
How about some polling goodness?
It looks like the Arlen Specter ad featuring President Obama is propelling Specter back into a tie with Sestak. The new Franklin & Marshall poll shows Sestak leading by two points among likely voters, 38% to 35%. The latest Mullenberg/Morning Call tracking poll shows Specter and Sestak tied at 45% each. Meanwhile, another poll, Quinnipiac, shows Sestak momentum, but with Specter still leading 44% to 42%. A month ago, in the same poll, Specter lead by 21 points, and a week ago, Specter lead by 8 points. The primary is next Tuesday.
Also in Pennsylvania, Mark Critz (D) leads Tim Burns (R) 44% to 38% in the PA12 special election, according to a new Susquehanna poll.
In Massachusetts, the Republican Rasmussen survey shows Governor Patrick (D) leading his two challengers (Republican Charlie Baker and Independent Tim Cahill) 45% to 31% for Baker and 14% for Cahill.
In yet another sign that 2010 is going to break the Republicans’ hearts, a new PPP poll in North Carolina shows both Elaine Marshall (D) and Cal Cunningham (D) have both gained ground on Sen. Richard Burr (R). Burr leads Marshall by only 43% to 42%, and leads Cunningham, 44% to 39%.
In other news, the Republicans will party in 2012 in Tampa. I guess choosing Phoenix, the other main competitor for the 2012 RNC would be too controversial…. even for Republicans.
West Virginia Congressman Alan Mollohan (D) lost his bid for renomination to a 15th last night, and like Christopher Dodd in Connecticut, not having Mollohan on the ballot actually improves the Democrats’ chances of holding the seat. Indeed, it is probably in the “Lean D” or “Likely D” category now instead of “Tossup.”
Re: GOP 2012 Convention, is this now the first big event AZ has unofficially-officially lost because of its Jose Crow Law? The other choice was Salt Lake City, but with Mitt Romney a likely contender, some saw having the convention in the home of the Mormon church as a bit problematic. So, good luck Tampa, and I hope you have the beaches cleaned up by then.
I would say so. Salt Lake City was never really in contention given the strict moral laws they have out there, and given the GOP’s love of strip and bondage clubs, that is a nonstarter.
I think you’ll see a lot of Republican leads in polls evaporate as election dates approach. Look at it this way: Republicans are fired up. When the pollster asks, they know exactly who they’re voting for (or against). Democrats, being less than thrilled by Obama’s centrism, are more likely to say they don’t know. But as the election approaches, they hold their noses and vote for the Democrat.
That’s just speculation, but I”m sticking with it until I hear a better explanation.
I also think as the economy and job numbers improves so do the Democrats’ poll numbers.
US troops executing prisoners in Afghanistan, journalist says
“The journalist who helped break the story that detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq were being tortured by their US jailers told an audience at a journalism conference last month that American soldiers are now executing prisoners in Afghanistan.”
And people wonder why I call him “Obomba.”
Torture and Murder 2010 = Torture and Murder 2005

Geezer, I think it’s all going to be around turnout. Democrats need to make sure the base is fired up. I’m not sure if resentment of Republicans is enough to drive things this time.
DelDem–Salt Lake was good enough for the Olympics–despite all those “strict moral laws” you narrowly propagate (great pun word huh?). It’s a beautiful city, with terrific venues–the biggest sin, is the rest of the world found out about it w/ the Olympics. Some stayed.
JC–
My brother lived in SLC for a couple of years back 10 years ago, and during the Olympics. Funny story, he actually worked at a Park City ski resort ski shop where some of the downhill events were held, and where the NBC Today show was broadcast from during the Olympics. Matt Lauer and Katie Couric came in to shop separately. When Matt Lauer came in, he work a hat and sunglasses and was trying not to bring attention to himself, and he bought shirts at full price for his kids.
When Katie Couric came in, and according to my brother, her appearance screamed ‘Cougar’ before we knew what Cougars were. My brother stayed beyond the counter and left her alone to shop, but she came over to him and asked if there was a discount available for the Olympics. Apparently, the store had a unpublicized policy of offering 20% to the “talent,” and even further discount of 40% based on store manager discretion. My brother offered her the full 40% off, and Katie responded “You do know who I am, don’t you?”
My brother said “Yes, Ms. Couric, I know who you are, but I am only allowed to give 40% off and even that is pushing it.” He said her body language and facial expressions seemed to indicate that she expected to get what she wanted for free, because she was Katie Couric.
But I digress. One other funny story about SLC is that Saturday Night Live was deemed too racy by local standards, so the local NBC station did not show it, at least back then.
It’s odd you didn’t even mention Hawaii. Oh, that’s right…no it isn’t. That wouldn’t fit your pathetic little narrative.
First of all, anyone who has ever rocked out to Dead Kennedys or Sex Pistols, or Ramones should see the move SLC Punk.. SPEAKING of salt late.
i also have a thought. What is the democratic establishment going to say when Specter loses? Big ed, Obama… all of them supported the turn coat and now their bad bet is gonna get em. I hope they have their talking points in order because you KNOW the Beckian spin will be “Obama’s endorsement is now POISON!”
Hey Digby, the Republican there is only winning because there are two Democrats in the race, spitting the 60% Democratic vote. Come November, the seat will be back in Democratic hands. How is that for a narrative.
Anyone who went to BYU knows what a cougar is :)!!!!
They most likely know what a jack mormon is, too.
