Republican Convention Today

Filed in National by on May 15, 2010

You are to be forgiven if you have no idea that the Republicans are meeting today to give out party endorsements.  I have only really seen it discussed on the blogs on the other side of the political spectrum.  But the comments section of those threads have been highly entertaining.

The local tea partiers like the 9-12 “patriots” and others have been beating the drum to get Mike Castle ousted and to nip the Michelle Rollins machine in the bud.  It is easy to reject these sorts of stupidity.  For one, Christine O’Donnell and Urquhart/Wade are awful candidates.  But these guys are such scorched earth operators that they have already turned the potentially sympathetic delegates against their candidates with their stupidity.  Evan Q, a frequent commenter and occasional thinker, decided to send out a mailer to all delegates.  Unfortunately, he mailed it out on his organizations letterhead, making it look like an organization had endorsed O’Donnell.  Personally, I wonder if the organization is a non-profit.  But apparently only candidates have access to the mailing list, so the question is who gave Evan the list and why did Evan “give it to an organization” for mailing?

Either way, let me make it clear, I would love for O’Donnell and Urquhart/Wade to knock off the favorites.  I would LOVE it!  But even if they do, the real candidate is the one that wins the primary, so even if they win today, they will still be losers.

  1. Will Biden Be Unopposed? : Delaware Liberal | May 19, 2010

Yeah, you’re to be forgiven for not noticing the two stories on the front page of the News Journal this week talking about the convention. ‘Cause it’s OK not to pay attention to the news and then pontificate on it.

  2. According to my Twitter feed: Castle got the endorsement for Senate. Rollins got the endorsement for U.S. House (it took 2 ballots). Bonini got the Treasurer’s nomination and Wagner got the nomination for Auditor. They did not have a candidate for AG.

  3. MJ says:

There was a special drag show last night at the Blue Moon for the conventioneers. Delusional David really looks OK in a dress. Too bad he can only lip-sync.

  4. Brooke says:

MJ, if you have pictures, I have a billboard free. 😀

So we can continue to fuck him….over?

  6. anon says:

Rollins wins on 2nd ballot with 231 votes; Urquhart had 106. Wade, with 72 votes on the first ballot, was automatically dropped from the second round. Urquhart said he’ll take it to a primary; no word on whether Wade is in it to the end.

  7. Jason330 says:

Sounds like Castle and Rollins are going to have to use bucks istead of boots on the ground. The is a real “ho hum” feel to this race among the people who do the actual Telephone banking and door knocking. That’s good news for Coons and Carney.

  8. Matt says:

Good news for Carney, but Coons has no shot

  9. anon says:

I wonder how much of the ho-humness is due to general ennui or actual Tea Party-ist outrage against the GOP establishment. I’d wager more the former, because I’m hearing much the same about Carney and Coons.

I think both sides would do themselves a huge favor if they approved a week-long statewide paid vacation for everyone in the state between now and September, say, giving everyone a chance to relax and rejuvenate and bounce back into the political fray. Besides, I could sure use one. 😉

  10. Jason330 says:

If the election was today. Good thing for Coon the election is not today.

  11. If only we ran our elections like that:

‘Rollins wins on 2nd ballot with 231 votes; Urquhart had 106. Wade, with 72 votes on the first ballot, was automatically dropped from the second round. Urquhart said he’ll take it to a primary; no word on whether Wade is in it to the end.’

Then we could safely run third parties and guarantee an over fifty percent backing for the winner.

  12. anon says:

How did Castle arrange for the Dover High School Marching Band to be there to serenade him in? Were taxpayer dollars used to transport the band from Dover to the Repub Convention?

    Pics can be seen here….

  13. Brooke says:

I would think it would be a problem even if they were funded by the band boosters. If they’re 501c3, they can’t support candidates. Pretty sure no one will look into it, though.

  14. liberalgeek says:

Actually, the question was asked. Mike Castle paid for the band to be there.

  15. kavips says:

So looking at the big picture, Delaware is expected to continue supporting the policies of Dick Cheney, long after he has abandoned the party’s leadership role through the re-election of Mike Castle, because Mike Castle’s campaign paid for Dover High School’s band to serenade him alongside fellow Republicans?

That’s apparently the message being sent by the Castle campaign. “He deserves your vote.”

If you see one of them in person, ask… “for what?”

  16. For saying “no” to things, kavips.
