Bonini Gets Coveted Has-Been Out-of-State Governors Endorsement

Filed in Delaware, National by on May 28, 2010

Congratulations Colin Bonini!

[Former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd] Whitman and former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore both expressed caution about November, despite predictions from political observers that Republicans could pick up a host of seats in Congress. Whitman and Gilmore spent Wednesday crossing the state and campaigning for Republican candidate for treasurer Colin Bonini.

As both former governors participate in rallies and events across the nation, they say, jobs and the economy remain the top issues people are talking about.

Christine Todd Whitman was a well-regarded Governor of New Jersey but ruined her reputation as Bush’s first EPA Director (she’s the one who said the air at Ground Zero was o.k. to breathe). I’m pretty sure most hard-core Republicans would consider her a RINO because she believes in climate change and allegedly left the Bush administration because of the suppression of EPA reports. She even wrote a book called “It’s My Party Too” taking Republicans to task for their social conservatism and rejection of moderates (sound familiar?). It’s pretty disappointing that she’s now attending Tea Party rallies.

Jim Gilmore has the dubious distinction of being a forgettable Governor of Virginia, and the first Republican to drop out of the presidential race. (How many of you remember he ran for president?) He decided to run for Senate from Virginia but couldn’t even gain the endorsement of the Republican retiring from the Senate seat. He ended up being defeated handily by Mark Warner.

I seriously doubt that the endorsement of Whitman or Gilmore will have any effect on the general election in November. This is all about fundraising and establishing Bonini as some kind of GOP golden boy. State Republicans are going all out for Bonini. He’s raised boatloads of money for the State Treasurer race (more than both Democratic candidates put together). Do they see Bonini as the new Delaware GOP savior? Am I missing something because I fail to see the appeal.

Thank you for finally publishing something on this in State Teabagger. He has been meeting with everyone except the people in his own district. You you see some of his radical ideas on education.

There is one thing we’ve learned about the Bonini brain trust during his term in the Senate. He consistently votes no on pretty much everything. It tends to simplify life when you know what your vote will be before you even read a bill. In fact, it pretty much eliminates the onerous task of actually reading the bill. Collect that paycheck from the taxpayers but put in as little effort as possible.

  3. One curious thing that Bonini said while sitting with me as a DelCOG panelist was that he didn’t respond to emails and petitions – he considers electronic means of communication ‘too easy’ for constituents and therefore less worthy of his attention. UNREAL.

The way to get Bonini’s ear is to go to leg hall and ask for a meeting face-to-face. Welcome to the 21st Century? Will we have to go to the Treasurers office for an answer to questions and concerns too?

  4. Of course you would miss the appeal. Go Colin go. I will cover the next event. I am allergic to Whitman. She vetoed a partial birth abortion ban. I would pay 10 dollars not to see her. I was happy to see the event take place though. It showed the entire party is rallying behind a good man.

  5. You can bring $10 to the next Drinking Liberally. I guarantee that Whitman won’t be there.

  6. Nancy, I think you’ve hit on Bonini’s ad tagline:

Colin Bonini: Because email is just too easy.

UI, you are cracking me up today, both with the title, and with the invitation to David.

Keep in mind that the DE GOP watches closely the six statewide seats, and hates that they are down to only 1 (auditor). Given that they have no one for AG, they are apparently ‘doubling-down’ on Bonini, and putting two races’ contributions into this one race.

They would love to win two of this year’s three statewide races.

Of course with the never-ending revelations of frauds conducted under Wagner’s watchful eye, I would hope to see a D win the auditor race.

    Role model?

The dismay and blame surrounding the pension funds are directed mostly at former Gov. Christie Whitman, who now more than ever is accused of mortgaging the state’s future to pay for the tax cuts that propelled her to national prominence.

  10. Whitman is definitely from the Republican mold of do things now that make me popular and let other people clean up the mess.

I think that means Bonini doesn’t know how to use a computer. I mean, who the hell doesn’t use e-mail? If elected treasurer, is he going to make everything be printed on papyrus?

OK, OK … I know, that was from Nancy, who got her own blind item on the IC’s office and CRI completely wrong, but we should still trust her, because she has a blog! Right? Right?
