Breaking: General McChrystal Relieved of Command

Filed in National by on June 23, 2010

And apparently General Petraeus is in command of the Afghan effort.

Link to news.

There is supposed to be an announcement by President Obama shortly, so if you are listening, use this thread to discuss.

I gotta say I am stone surprised he did this, but I am very, very glad he did.

    I’m watching.

    I’m thrilled, as well, Cassandra.

  2. Ishmael says:

Thats two in a row. (Generals in charge of Afghanistan)

  3. AQC says:

    as it should be

  4. jason330 says:

This is part of the reveal. Phase two is making the call that (having been lied to) we are leaving Afghanistan tomorrow.

  5. cassandra_m says:

CSpan is showing the President’s address shortly via the web for people at work….

  6. anonone says:

Good that he fired him. Bad that he hired General Betray-us.

  7. jason330 says:

Sounds like he is not throwing McChyrstal under the bus. I guess phase II is planned for later on.

  8. cassandra_m says:

Actually, if I were in Obama’s shoes I would have relieved them all (based on the Rolling Stone account) — McChrystal, Eikenberry, and Holbrooke.

Let me guess – Phase Two begins in 2014?

  10. jason330 says:

Don’t even pretend to understand the reveal.

  11. anonone says:

You’re turning your Obama worship into a religion.

  12. jason330 says:

So? The REVEAL makes more sense than Scientology.

“Actually, if I were in Obama’s shoes I would have relieved them all (based on the Rolling Stone account) — McChrystal, Eikenberry, and Holbrooke.”

Holy SheepShit, Cassandra and I agree. By her logic, she must be stupid.

  14. anonone says:

Its ALL a mystery. Don’t ask questions.

  15. delacrat says:

I suppose it’s good that Obomba finally grew a pair.

But, keep in mind that McChrystal was relieved for insulting the crown, not for his war crimes.

  16. a.price says:

insulting the crown? you DO realize the military code by which he was sacked was written NOT by the evil right wing dictator Obama, but long ago when presidents were still owned by corporations and white doncha?
what is it with the teabags on the right AND left. Any time ANY law gets enforced everyone jumps to the “OBAMA IS A DICTATOR THROWING EVERYONE IN JAIL WHO BADMOUTHS HIM” argument.
know what? Lincoln ACTUALLY did that. and HE is on a mountain.

  17. liberalgeek says:

    IOKIYAR, a.price.

  18. skippertee says:

Don’t worry about McChrystal’s skinny ass. He’s in for a soft landing.
The majority of his Army career was spent “in the dark”.They’ll find a desk for him with a shit-load of subordinates at the CIA or he’ll be running BLACKWATER within two years.

  19. Ishmael says:

will one of you morons post the quote where McChrystal “insults the Crown”… or disagrees with administration policy…

You can’t because it isn’t in the Rolling Stone article. In six pages of article there are barely a dozen words of direct McChrystal quotation (and half of them aren’t even sentences, just phrases ).

Since the only semi juicey quotes are unatributed except to identify the speaker as staff and a substantial portion of his staff are DOD civilian employees or contractors… it’s not clear from the article that any soldier under his comand violated the UCMJ.

Being a 4 star General is not a union job, Obama can fire McChrystal for any reason or no reason at all.

  20. a.price says:

    what is IOKIYAR?

Ish, while it is true that McChrystal didnt actually speak the words, those who work for him DID. and they clearly felt comfortable enough speaking like that around him IN FRONT of the press for anyone with a brain to realize he is ok with it. That is the halmark of a bad leader. Now he is gone.

  21. Phil says:

“…but long ago when presidents were still owned by corporations and white doncha?”

    They still are.

what is IOKIYAR? (It’s OK if your’re a Republican.)

  23. I have to admit I’m surprised Obama fired McChrystal. Obama is always trying to get along with his critics. I guess the same policies will continue though since he chose Petraeus to replace McChrystal.
