Who’s Running – County Edition
On Tuesday we took a look at who’s running for statewide office and for the General Assembly. Now let’s take a look at who’s running for countywide offices. You can look at the Delaware Elections page for primaries and general election information.
New Castle County
Sheriff – Mike Walsh (D – incumbent) vs. Trinidad Navarro (D) [primary, no general election opponent yet]
Register of Wills – Ciro Poppiti (D) [open seat – no filed opponent]
Recorder of Deeds – Mike Kozikowski (D – incumbent) [no filed opponent]
County Council District 1 – Joe Reda (D – incumbent) vs. Joseph Suiter (R)
County Council District 2 – Michael Anone (D) vs. Robert Weiner (R – incumbent)
County Council District 3 – Renee Tanscher (D) vs. Janet Kilpatrick (R) [open seat – Bill Tansey is retiring]
County Council District 5 – Lisa Diller (D – incumbent) [no filed opponent]
County Council District 6 – William Powers (D – incumbent) vs. Andrea Daley (R)
I have to say here that the Republicans did a good job getting opponents for these races. All Democratic incumbents except Lisa Diller have opponents right now.
Kent County
Sheriff – James Higdon, Jr. (R – incumbent) [no filed opponent]
Recorder of Deeds – Betty Lou McKenna (D – incumbent) vs. Michael Lindquist (R)
Levy Court District 2 – Bradley Eaby (D – incumbent) [no filed opponent]

Levy Court At Large – Terry Pepper (D) vs. Wallace Edmanson (R) [Richard Ennis (D) is incumbent]
Sussex County

The bill to allow Sussex County government retirees to run for office without forfeiting their annuities was passed.
MJ regarding your post that the legislature passed a bill that allows Sussex County retirees to run for office without forfeiting their annuities, does that mean retired County employees from Kent or NCC still forfeit their annuities? I don’t understand?
Kent & NCC have no such law, Sussex is the only one, and it has long been considered an “incumbent job security” program!

How long did they have the law? No retiree ever challenged it in court?
Wait, wasn’t Protack going to run for one of those County Council seats? Does this mean that if he does file, we’ll have another Protack primary? YES!
Yes, I noticed the lack of a Protack candidacy as well. I’m disappointed because we have so many crazy statements in our archives. I thought he was going to run for the 3rd County Council District seat.
Protack’s not running because:
A. He’d win
B. He’d actually have to govern.
The law in Sussex has been around for decades. No one’s ever challenged it. But Atkins did write a letter to the county a few months ago objecting, and they never did him the courtesy of a response.
Also in Sussex, the Fourth Councilmatic is up for election. Don’t look for a contested race, though. George Cole, the Republican who sounds like a Democrat on development issues, has held the seat forever (and his dad and mom before him) and won his last two races with nearly 90 percent against Wolfgang of the Ipods. No Democrat is going to be stupid enough to run against him – and there’s no way they could win if they did.

What’s an election cycle without a Protack candidacy?
We’ll have to watch the filings to see if Protack actually runs.
Problem with Nemski’s thesis:
He won’t even get out of the primary, much less win. Kilpatrick beats him 2-1 at least, probably 3-1. Maybe 5-1.
Which means he’s probably running.
Protack ran for the Senate and lost in a Republican primary to a liberal, openly pro choice candidate who has since become a Democrat, ran for Governor and couldn’t break 30% in the primary against a 72 year old man who had to be coerced to run and that Protack smeared endlessly in attack ads, lost his bid to become his District’s Chair, and is headed for a big loss for a county council seat.
All of the pink postcards in the universe can’t help Protack.
Expect him to run for President in 2012.
