The Overton Window is perhaps one of the most overused memes in political blogs, but it is a good way to look at what is acceptable as public policy by the general populace. The problem is that the fringe right pushes this window to nonsensical and outlandish views of the world — imagine Pee-Wee’s Playhouse hosted by Glenn Beck.
Recently in Unstable Isotope’s post, “NOAA: Man-Made Global Warming is Unmistakable”, Republican David wrote the following:
If we don’t have global warming, we will need to invent it to prevent the next ice age. Global warming is good. It gives better crop yields and is helpful to most plants and therefore life on earth. It would be nice if we could claim credit for something good in the ecology. Usually we are messing something up.
As I read something like this that is so utterly jaw-droppingly stupid, I wonder what is next for the lunatic asylum know as the Tea Party. How about this? The next time a “family values” Republican gets caught being gay like Roy Ashburn of California, the bloggers from the Land of Make Believe can say:
Yes, Roy Ashburn might be gay, but he voted against gay rights. Don’t you see, Republicans can vote against something even when it goes against their best interests.
