Three Nauseating Things About Charlie Copeland’s Endorsement of Christine O’Donnell

Filed in National by on September 25, 2010

How much does Charlie Copeland’s endorsement of Christine O’Donnell on WDEL the other day expose him as a partisan fraud? Let me count the ways.

3) Copeland’s support of O’Donnell cements his identity as a coward. The courageous course would have been to position flatly repudiate O’Donnell and her out of state handlers. Nobody expected gutless Copeland to go that route. The neutral, but still cowardly position would have been to say nothing. Charlie could have pulled that off – but he took the VERY wormlike and absolutely spineless course and actually supporting O’Donnell, even while Castle is undecided about his next step.

2) O’Donnell’s anti-science agenda insults Copeland’s NCC “base.” By supporting the teabagging, anti-science nonsense espoused by O’Donnell, Copeland is spitting on the rational conservative NCC engineers and accountants in the face for the sake of being a GOP team player. Charlie simply can’t get enough of selling out the Republicans who regard “conservatism” to mean level headed and serious.

1) Copeland is supporting the rank lying, bullying and gay baiting that took down Mike Castle. That lying, bullying and gay baiting can (and will) be turned on Copeland’s fey, foppish self should he ever found himself on the wrong side of the O’Donnell brownshirts. Does anyone think that the teabaggers would think twice about a whisper campaign against Charlie Copeland? Hell no. It is a testament to Copeland’s stupidity that he thinks he can cozy up to these goons now in order to buy some soft treatment later.

The Whole DE GOP’s reaction to O’Donnell’s win has been vomit inducing. Copeland’s doubly so.

  1. It’s both amusing and sad to see the Delaware GOP cowed by the O’Donnell express. One poster here asked if O’Donnell was the GOP’s Alvin Greene. Not at all. The Democratic party is not offering support to such an unqualified candidate. The GOP has all hopped on board the O’Donnell crazy train.

I think we at DL spent more than a year warning the GOP of the consequences of embracing the teabaggers. Now they are the party of Christine O’Donnell. I wonder how long it takes before the big money folks jump off the train?

Also, doesn’t it make you ill how they’re patting Christine on the back while trying to push Castle back in the race. They don’t have loyalty to their own people and it’s o.k. if they beat each other up because it increases the odds for the R team.

  2. Dana Garrett says:

Copeland might eventually regret that endorsement if it turns out that COD really did embezzle campaign funds for personal use and if she gets into real trouble for it.

Imagine that as an argument against Copeland in a future electoral race: “Charlie Copeland supports crooks. Is that who we need as our next _____________?”

  3. Good point, Dana. Copeland won’t be able to say the he didn’t know, since the accusations of misuse of campaign funds has been out since March of this year.

  4. anon says:

actually supporting O’Donnell, even while Castle is undecided about his next step.

Maybe Copeland knows something about Castle’s plans.

  5. delacrat says:

“The courageous course would have been to position flatly repudiate O’Donnell and her out-of-state handlers.”

Copeland is angling to be O’Donnell’s in-state handler.

  6. anon says:

Copeland’s goal in life is to eliminate the estate tax. Each passing year makes it more urgent for him.

The endorsement makes perfect sense seen through that lens.

  7. MJ says:

We’re seeing the GOP moneybags already getting off the train in Colorado. GOP insiders are holding fundraisers for the Democrat running for governor; the teabagger-GOP candidate only raised $50K in the last month, which was less than he raised in August. Colorado doesn’t have the history of ticket-splitting that Delaware has, which probably means that the GOP hopes of regaining control of the legislature are lost. And that means the Dems will control redistricting.

  8. Polemical says:

For the record: Christine O’Donnell was NEVER a Tea Partier. She didn’t have ANY support, save for a few non-meaningful support groups. The Tea Party Express (TPE) endorsed her (during the Glenn Beck Rally); her campaign people sought the TPE.

She took the support for obvious reasons (money, access and exposure). SHe’s a Social Conservative; she only feigns approval of the TPS’s agenda b/c she is broke.

  9. cobbler says:

I agree with anon; Castle must have put the word out to money boys like Copeland that he won’t be a write-in. Boys that is a lot of work, and Castle is not use to banging on doors. As former election commissioner I know what Christine went through to become a write-in candidate.
I don’t know why you all are surprised Republicans are jumping on Christine’s bandwagon; am I the only one who ever heard Joe Biden say, “On Election Day the Republicans always come home.”

  10. cobbler says:

Polemical I have a bridge I would like to sell you.

  11. Bob Dull, I mean Dole, has endorsed O’Donnell.

  12. Venus says:

    Is he still alive?

  13. jason330 says:

When Castle endorses O’Donnell that will mark it. The tbagz will have won and will have taken over the GOP without firing a shot in anger.

  14. Mike Fleming Sucks says:

Liberals, don’t sweat it. Copeland has no future race. The Castle train has wrecked and with it goes the cronies who have attempted to control the GOP. In thee future the candidates who have been abused and potential leaders brushed asdie by the GOP will rule the party.

The gig is up. Kovach is out also, so is Lavelle.

    Coons by 8%.

  15. Anon Knows Nothing says:

I don’t think it matters who endorses O’Donnell, unless Jesus returns she will lose.

As for future races the only way the GOP has a future is to dump every part of their so called leadership the day after the election and go after the seat being vacated by Paul Clark.

  16. Charles In Charge? says:

Christine O’Donnell spent almost nothing in 2008 and got 35.3% of the vote against Joe Biden.

Charlie spent a ton (well, by non-heir standards) on his campaign and and got 38% against Matt Denn.

Embarrassing results for the Chosen One.

Charlie then gets heat from his party, who remembers him throwing some of their candidates under the bus and saying during that campaign how much he’d like to work with Democrats like Joe Biden and Jack Markell.

So, to keep his primary hopes alive, Charlie helps sponsor the tea-party rallies in Wilmington, speaking at more than one.

And the tea parties rise up and defeat Mike Castle.

So Charlie, seeing his primary hopes fading, backs a person he would barely even appear with in October when they were on the ticket in 2008 – when she was running for the same office she is now.

  17. Geezer says:

    Those Protack boys are back.

  18. jason330 says:

    You got that right.

  19. Another Mike says:

“SHe’s a Social Conservative; she only feigns approval of the TPS’s agenda b/c she is broke.”

What exactly is the TPS’ agenda? I’ve never heard anything but “take our country back,” “defend the constitution” and “lower taxes.”

  20. Anon Knows Nothing says:

ah yes, every time the truth is said about the GOP you blame Protack. Such fools you are. Your knowledge of politics is very sad and non existent.

You don’t realize the reality of what is said, the GOP establishment is no more and while you blame Protack you should blame the stupid fools at the GOP who are goners and they know it. They brought it on and they always blame everyone else.

The steel pipe the GOP clowns have tried to shove up his ass is now being used to hit the GOP elites over the head. Funny thing is the guy the Tea Party and other Republicans will look to for the future is likely to be Protack. The revolution in the GOP has only started. In a few months idiots like Don Mell will be no more.

The rub of it all is while the GOP hacks wake up every day trying to assault principled guys like Protack they lost control of the Republican party. Even better, Protack could not care less, he is in the driver’s seat and loving life.

  21. YHGTBSM says:

Boys and girls. Copeland gave a decent endorsement but it will mean little to Delaware voters. Charlie’s train has left the station with the downfall of the GOP establishment and within the Tea Party Charlie’s support for Castle has soured the Tea Party on him.

This morning I am wiping the barf on my keyboard as that cow Beth Miller quoted boozer loser Bill Lee and GOP consultant (?) Don Mell. Who is he a consultant for? Let me tell you- no one.

Ross recruited Lee for 2008? The guy who got 31% of the vote, who fell asleep at debates and generally had no campaign. For that reason alone Ross should go. The f’d up News Journal says the GOP needed a respectable candidate for Governor in 2008 which really means a has been who will make way for a huge Democrat win.

  22. I’m pretty sure if Jesus came back he’d endorse Chris Coons.

  23. anon says:

It would be wise to remember, before taking seriously anything that Copeland says, that he got 7216 less Republican votes in 2008, than did Insurance Commissioner John Brady.

That means statewide, more statewide Republicans feel John Brady better represents the party, than this self proclaimed “official” spokesperson.

Does anything Copeland says, still matter?

  24. jpconnorjr says:

I think money bags charlie makes a perfect spokesperson for the republican party:)! And you are right they were so pleased with their top vote getterin ’08 that they drove him back to the Dems.

  25. WTFC says:

No matter who comes out as a GOP candidate will be hamstrung by the past screw ups of the party.

The only one who will be successful will have to be a bit more populist and a bit more blue collar friendly who can wrestle the good parts of the Tea Party in to reality.

The one guy who tool a big hit this year is Wedo who has to know the Greenville sector is a non factor statewide. Greenville had some power this year in the county race where the Tea Party is a non starter and protecting Castle and Rollins was numero uno.
