Wednesday’s Asshat of the Day
Our winner today is a contributor at that den of wingnuts known as Delaware Politics, or what I like to call, the cuckoo’s nest. And it seems that one of them has flown over it.
Angel Clark, who blogs as Sussex County Angel, put up a post yesterday advocating an economic boycott of any business that has a Pete Schwartzkopf sign on its property. She specifically singled out Atlantic Liquors on Route 1 and Old Landing Road, which has a huge Pete sign on it’s property and also advertises on WGOP. And she faults them because Pete supported HB 212 which would have raised liquor taxes. And how much would taxes have gone up? Just a few pennies! And this 2 cents per 12 ounce can of beer or 15 cents on a 750 ml bottle of Absolut probably wouldn’t have been noticed.
What Angel doesn’t see is that there are some people and businesses that might not mind paying more taxes. If the money is going to go to education and police and fire protection, hell, I bet a lot of people would pay a few more cents.
But Angel has advocated that people vote with their pocketbook if their favorite store has a campaign sign for a candidate one might not approve of. Hmmm. Grotto Pizza had Michelle Rollins’ signs out front of most of their restaurants, including the Grotto Grand Slam on Route 1. Well, I guess I won’t eat Grotto’s, but it’s not because of that, I just don’t like their pizza. And I guess I shouldn’t shop at Home Depot because they have Urkel’s sign out front. Oh wait, Pete has a sign there, too. Now I don’t know what to do.
Angel, advocating a boycott of a business because you don’t like the fact that the owners like Pete (because, unlike your sock-puppet candidate, Pete doesn’t see political labels when it comes to helping residents) is bad business and wreckless. It also earns you today’s Asshat of the Day Award.
BTW, Angel, the only ones who feel that Pete “has overstepped his bounds in many aspects of the legislature” can be counted on 2 hands – you, St. Bodie Girl, and the chicken s**ts behind the anonymous attack website.
I’ve only been following lower Delaware peripherally, but Pete seems like a good guy, and this sounds like the politics of desperation.
So what does this angel do, that they can throw the first stone?
I’m with Angel. I don’t think businesses should get involved in politics. A store that is supporting a candidate that I don’t will not get my business. I won’t go to Grotto Pizza ever if I can. I really don’t understand why a business would risk alienating their customers.
That’s fine, UI, but to openly advocate a boycott? That’s crossing the line, a bit. I can see boycotting a company that is racist or uses slave labor (for the longest time, we didn’t eat table grapes or lettuce), but for a campaign sign?
And Grotto really does have lousy pizza.
Willey Farms on 13 between Smyrna and Middletown is a big O’Donnell supporter. It makes me question their sanity and their vegetables.
O’Donnell is supposed to be at Willey Farms this Saturday. The flyer even mentioned Tea Party.
they do deal in fruits and nuts at Willey farms? Their support is totally logical.
so UI just for giggles do you not use nationally branded products and services who’s PACs are majpr suppurters of republican causes, committees, and candidates?
BTW i can proudly say I was blocked by Sussex County Anget for pointing out her hypocracy:)
OH NO! And I planned on going to Willey’s this weekend because they will have a Cinderella pumpkin. Damn. I wonder if I can get Muskrat Mama to wear the muskrat suit I just bought? That might be worth the trip….
I agree with UI. I don’t support any businesses that I know are supporting or funding right wing candidates.
I agree it’s hard to avoid companies that give to rightwingers. I try where I can. My boycotts are always personal ones.
i boycott a very popular hot dog joint by my office because of the way they treated one employee, I get personal:)
An obscure right – wing blogger is pretty small potatoes when it comes to asshat status.
A worthier candidate would be Sec. of “Defense”, Gates.
A US citizen is gouged for $2,100 / year for “defense”.
(By comparison, a Canadian is only soaked for $568 /yr)
But Gates does not think $2,100 / year (add another $4,200 if you have a spouse and kid) is a burden.
“Willey Farms on 13 between Smyrna and Middletown is a big O’Donnell supporter. It makes me question their sanity and their vegetables.”
Good one Jason330!
I’ve boycotted Amazon and Home Depot for years because of their PAC spending. And, of course, Walmart for a whole host of reasons. And recently I’ve added BP to my list of no-goes. And Grotto Pizza. And Bank of America. Guess I’ll add Willey Farms to my list. I’m sure it has no impact but it makes me feel good.
I don’t know anyone liberal enough to boycott Verizon, Comcast, or AT&T.
“What? Disconnect my iBauble?” (clutches pearls)
The best you can do is limit your exposure to them. They hate when you won’t sign the new more expensive two-year contract.
“Willey Farms on 13 between Smyrna and Middletown is a big O’Donnell supporter. It makes me question their sanity and their vegetables.”
why? you at least know what the carrots, cucumbers, zucchini etc. were never used for.
Sussex County Angel – yup – with her toenails painted with the Gadsden flag on them…too funny
yep she’s a Colley and Bodie devotee and wouldn’t know a class act if it ran her over!!
wonder when she will wake up and realize what an idiot she is?
Angel Clark, another ignorant Tea Party thug. Half the registered R’s in New Castle County would switch to “I” immediately if they read the hate filled superstitious stew served up on a daily basis on that site. Good to see that they have transitioned seamlessly from threats of violence against the local Hispanic community to the harassment of local businesses.
Oh no the threats of Violence against the Hispanic community have not stopped
Rick – over on DP has threatened to round “them” up with 5 guys in trucks with shotguns
and last night – at the candidates forum in Lewes, Mr. Towers from Towers Electric let it be known that HIS cure for illegal immigration is “shoot them as they cross the border” – another Tea Bag thug
then was offensive and threatneing to a member of the Latino community that was there.
Nice – and this guys is a Weeks/Briggs-King supporter – you know the people that went to the Hola (Latino) awards ceremony Saturday night
how’s that for hypocracy??
Yo Mj, if you’re going to tell people how they should vote you just MIGHT want to actually learn how to spell the word reckless. It might make your opinion carry a bit more weight. Otherwise they might see you for what you really are: an intellectually lazy, reactionary poseur.
Why in the hell SHOULDN’T someone boycott a business because of their politics? Because we should all worship at the altar of the economy, morals and ethics be damned? Did it ever occur to you that supporting a business who’s politics you disagree with just might, y’know, give increased material support to a point of view you find unjust?? If I may take your argument to a ridiculous degree (cite your Godwin’s law if you must), I’m supposed to support a Grotto’s if they put a sign in their front yard for the Nazi party? What exactly do you think politics is, a game of ping-pong?
And just as an aside…FUCK taxes. Every time I think of some wedding in Pakistan where 40 innocents are killed by one of our drones to get some supposed terrorist, I resent paying my taxes just a little bit more. I question the sincerity and sanity of someone that doesn’t.
Looks like WB decided to come out of his cave and stretch his legs and lungs. OK, you did it, no go back to sleep. And I wasn’t telling anyone how to vote.
