I was going to post an asshat award today, but instead, I’m honoring the men and women from numerous countries who worked for over two months to rescue the 33 Chilean miners. Many times we throw the word “hero” around to loosely, making some very mundane actions heroic.
What these men and women did to keep these men alive and to rescue them from 2300 feet below the earth was heroic. To the father of Homer Hickam (from October Sky fame), you are a hero for designing the capsule decades ago that was used to rescue these men. To the families who never gave up hope, you are heroes.
And to the miners themselves, who endured being cut-off from civilization for 70 days, who kept it together, and who believed, you are heroes.
