Reports From the GOTV Front Lines

Filed in National by on October 17, 2010

A great many Democrats were out pounding the pavement yesterday. (I wasn’t because I had to support the cause of cleaning the perennials out of the northward facing flower beds.) But I know you were out knocking on doors. How did it go? What’s the buzz? Pour us a cup of your thoughts, then hit the sidewalk. Those doors are not going to knock on themselves you know.

  1. I didn’t go this week but the last two weeks have been fairly positive. Very few undecideds and even irregular voters seem ready to vote. Most are quite enthusiastic about Chris Coons. Less are enthusiastic about John Carney or Chip Flowers (they just know less about the race). I haven’t had any doors slammed in my face anyway.

I’ve been phoning and doing data entry. Both are encouraging. No scientific reason for this observation, but I’m thinking that the I’s are leaning D this year.

The GOP message insults the intelligence of any moderately aware person. “Tax cuts, tax cuts, tax cuts.” It is like saying “chocolate cake and ice cream for every meal!” I can see how that works in the Republican primary when you are basically dealing with a self-selected population of zombified nit wits, but if it works in a general election this country is in deep deep trouble.

  4. Jason, I don’t think it’s the message that is winning. If you look at polls Republicans are still unpopular. I think the logic of the general public (that doesn’t follow politics) is that things are bad let’s give the other guys a shot. I really think it is that simple.

Even an elementary school student can figure out that “tax cuts for everyone!” and “deficit bad!” are two contradictory messages.

News people should pepper O’Donnell with Questions about what she is going to do with the 3Million dollars that she got from the corporate interests after she loses. Is she going to give it back or pocket it? Anyone know what she is legally required to do?

  6. She can keep the unused money. She can transfer to a new committee, give it charity or donate it to the party or other candidates. Our speculation is that she’ll hoard it and start a charitable organization with her at the head and pay herself a huge salary to run it.

Sussex County had another 1,000 person outreach yesterday. Between door knocking efforts and phone banking we reached 1,000 D’s.

Last Wednesday, Sussex made 1,600 phone calls.

If you have not done so already, please get involved at your local HQ. Just a few hours can be a big help. Election Day we need poll workers, phone bankers, runners, etc.
