Christine O’Donnell’s 1st Amendment Gaffe Goes Viral

Filed in Delaware, National by on October 19, 2010

As we suspected, the headlines from today’s Senate debate are brutal to Christine O’Donnell. The following headlines are from news organizations only (no blogs):

Guardian (UK): “Christine O’Donnell’s church and state gaffe makes voters laugh”

NPR: “Christine O’Donnell Stuns Audience With 1st Amendment Gaffe”

AOL News: “O’Donnell’s Constitution Question Floors Audience”

NBC News: “O’Donnell’s First Amendment confusion?”

This one’s my favorite CNN: “O’Donnell gets Coons for Constitutional Law 101”

Christine O’Donnell received a lesson on the Constitution at Delaware’s Widener Law School Tuesday, but unfortunately for the Republican Senate candidate it came during a debate with Democrat Chris Coons.

The Washington Post had a more neutral headline – “Separation of church and state questioned by Christine O’Donnell”

So you can enjoy the moment again:

And before all the O’Donnell fans get huffy, the O’Donnell campaign tried to make a clarification:

“In this morning’s WDEL debate, Christine O’Donnell was not questioning the concept of separation of church and state as subsequently established by the courts,” said campaign manager Matt Moran. “She simply made the point that the phrase appears nowhere in the Constitution.”

Yes, that’s Christine O’Donnell throwing the religious right under the bus AGAIN.

Malkin, Palin and all the low information voters on twitter have declared O’Donnell victory and gone home. The spin and the denial is impressive.

  2. Jason330 says:

The best part is her stupid smug face looking all happy at catching Coons in her clever trap.

  3. Blu_Coq says:

    lol! excellent.

Incredibly, there is another Coons/O’Donnell debate tomorrow morning.

It is hosted in a WHYY studio for rebroadcast later, so there won’t be the satisfying jeers of the audience, unless the cameramen oblige.

Inexplicably, the Dover Post has a better announcement of this debate than WHYY, which seems not to have it at all on their web site.

The broadcast schedule is screwy, as if there was an agreement not to broadcast it live:

The debate, which will be held from 8 to 9 a.m., will be recorded for broadcast on WHYY-TV at 7 p.m. that night. The debate will be rebroadcast at 5 and 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, and 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, on WHYY-TV and at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, and 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, on WHYY-TV’s Y Info channel.

The debate will also be available at WHYY.org/video shortly after the first broadcast.

On the other hand, the article claims the debate questions are developed from the WHYY voter forums, which should be good.

I feel bad for Chris. I for sure wouldn’t be up for a round two the day after. She gave me a headache with all her ranting and raving and rude interrupting.

  7. voices in my head says:

I feel like a railroad spike is being driven into my ear when she speaks. Wait, that’s me, subconsciously pushing a railroad spike into my ear, trying to make the sound of her voice stop.

Maybe I should try my nose, for a do it myself lobotomy?

  8. The Straight Scoop says:

One thing that is missed in this whole gaffe-a-mania is that Christine was asked recently what qualifies her to be a US Senator. She said that it was her “graduate fellowship in constitutional government from the Claremont Institute” that qualifies her as a candidate.

Nevermind that this was an 8-day course (hell, I had one-credit sports classes that met longer than that). The basis of her qualifications is her knowledge of constitutional government and she dropped this goldmine of a gaffe on the world.

Methinks she has officially jumped the shark. Can we go back to paying attention to actual, real races now?

  9. V says:

I overheard one of the professors over at Widener today saying that the Dean’s office was inundated with calls from tea partiers after the debate. They were horrified that they are teaching the law students so poorly that they would think that there is a separation of church and state in the constitution, thus their reaction.

We have now entered the Twilight Zone.

I’m reminded of the catch phrase of the fat, red-neck, stand-up comedian:

“That’s funny. I don’t care who you are.”

  11. Joe Cass says:

She has impressed AC360. The best clips come near the end of the video with clips of Christine declaring her constitutional superiority.
    Cooper schooled Christine

  12. Joe Cass says:

In Christine’s defense, they don’t teach about the constitution at Hogwarts.
