Almost Time for the DC Trip **UPDATED**

Filed in Delaware by on October 29, 2010

Saturday is almost upon us.  We are currently waiting on the last minute confirmations from the bus company about the features of the specific bus that we will be using for the DC trip as well as a few details about the drop off/pick up locations in DC.  In addition, I was just informed that there may be some extra seats available if a larger bus is assigned to us. Stay tuned.

**There are not seats, unless someone is not showing up.

If the bus has an entertainment package, we may run a movie on the trip, so I’m looking for suggestions.  I would think that we want a comedy, but one that could be easily ignored while chatting with others on the bus.  Any suggestions?  The suggestions so far are Idiocracy, Harold and Kumar, The Aristocrats, Tommy (The Rock Opera), Dr. Strangelove, Religulous, Jesus Camp and Office Space.

**UPDATE**

I’m promoting this thread to the top so we can update information. The latest:

The bus leaves from the Shipyard Shops in Wilmington at 8:00 a.m. The bus is supposed to be there at 7:45 a.m. (How many bets that the bus gets lost?)

Prohibited items: No glass, No kegs, No red wine
I haven’t paid the deposit to allow alcohol yet. I’m asked to pay it so alcohol may not be allowed. I’ll update.

I’m going to the store tonight to pick up cardboard, markers and a stencil. I plan to make a do-it-yourself sign on the ride down.

We still haven’t decided a meet-up spot in D.C. Let’s finalize that.

–UI

**UPDATE #2**

You will be able to bring alcohol on the bus. Please don’t make a mess. As said above, no glass, no kegs and no red wine.

    Dogma!

I’m so sorry that I can’t make this. Altho… Geek said he’d call me when you cross back into DE. For the brave of heart (and endurance) I’ll try and swing on down for an after-the-event drink!

  2. BluGalinDE says:

Hi, I signed up early, then went to sign up 2 friends last week and they’re on the wait list. What are their chances? Is someone going to contact wait list if there are additional seats?

One more question – I would be happy to bring a gallon of Bloody Marys if that would be cool – should I? Didn’t know the alcohol rules!

  3. dv says:

Why not Michael Moore’s “Capitalims, A love story”?

  4. heragain says:

Do you guys have a DC meet-up place picked out? I’m driving, due to volume of passengers, but it would be nice to see y’all. We can decorously represent reason from the First State together. 😉

  5. Jason330 says:

Look for the drunk guy with the empty bloody mary pitcher.

  6. June says:

will anyone be bringing a cooler (if we’re allowed to bring wine, etc.)?

  7. Yeah, I’m hoping to bring a cooler.

  8. jpconnorjr says:

food food Munchies are me:) I can bring basics and/or contribute to gourmet

  9. Is anyone bringing signs? Where can you get a sign made?

  10. heragain,

I think it’s a good idea to have a meet-up place but I guess I don’t the area we’ll be well enough to pick one.

  11. jpconnorjr says:

    WW2 Memorial is pretty central

  12. skippertee says:

Will anyone welcome ME after the character assassination I’ve had to endure from a.price?

  13. liberalgeek says:

Just don’t step on anyone’s head!

As for coolers and alcohol, no problems as long as the following are understood:

-If you get out-of-hand drunk, I will step on your head.

-Coolers will have to stay on the bus for the day (not permitted on the mall), so pack enough ice to keep it cool until we get back in the evening.

    http://www.rallytorestoresanity.com/faq/#gettingthere

  14. liberalgeek says:

Let me also suggest that jpconnorjr has a great idea. We can meet at the WWII memorial. There is actually a Delaware pillar there. What time should we gather?

  15. Here’s the FAQ for the rally.

The Rally will take place on the far eastern end of the National Mall between 3rd Street and 7th Street, known as East Seaton Park and Henry Park

How close is the WWII Memorial to the rally location?

  16. OpenMinded says:

I am looking forward to meeting y’all on the bus, bringing along a passle of unruly wimmin-folk with me. But they have promised to speak with their indoor voices. I’m bringing donuts for the trip down, and possibly one of those boxes of coffee if I think I can handle it.

Is there a bathroom on the bus?

  17. cassandra m says:

It’s about a mile give or take, I think. East Seaton Park is closer to the Capital Bldg.

  18. jpconnorjr says:

    Scratch my suggestion:)

  19. OpenMinded says:

Also, in the event the bus needs to park at RFK, I did hear that there would be a shuttle service into the Mall. In the event that the shuttle has a line a mile long, there is a nearby metro station…I think it costs $1.60 each way:

    http://www.wmata.com/rider_tools/tripplanner/tripplanner.cfm

  20. liberalgeek says:

How about we meet at the Hirshhorn museum on the Mall side of the building? It is pretty unique as landmarks go (it’s round) and it is at 7th St. So it’s just outside of the rally area.

  21. liberalgeek says:

Oh, and there is a bathroom on the bus. It is likely that we will end up at RFK and shuttling into the rally.

  22. jpconnorjr says:

I will be seeking 4 wheel metered (oops DC zoned) transport. Happy to have company:)

  23. MJ says:

I suggest you meet up near the Canadian Embassy on Pennsylvania Avenue NW or at the Navy Memorial-Archives Metro Station. You’ll be close to the rally site. Union Station is also a good meeting point (if the bus isn’t taking you all the way into DC) – you’ll also be close to the rally. If you’re parking at RFK, then it’s the scary Orange Line – nearest Metro to the rally is either Capitol South or Federal Center SW. And there are a lot of great restaurants on Pennsylvania Ave SE.

JP – all taxis in DC are now metered.

And be sure to take phone lists with you so you can make GOTV calls from the rally.

  24. cassandra m says:

Joe Cass — we better not find out you had a hand in this oh-so-evenhandedly reported foolishness.

    😆

  25. Joe Cass says:

I can’t stop laughing . I’ve been shot;I don’t use firearms.I’d take lead for anybody as would my Brothers. Unions rose from the ashes of the slaughters across this country. My legacy comes from corporate truncheons and police snipers.
As far as that goes, we only threaten life to distinguish who has paid for the bus and who gets capped. By capped I mean we knock the lid off their latte.By their latte I mean my Brothers had best not be jerking around in DC this weekend as we have work to accomplish.
You folks have a great time, please do tweets or posts here but always know you have tremendous support at home.

  26. Joanne Christian says:

I am so very sorry not to be going on this excursion due to work commitments, that could not be switched out. You folks are going to have a swell time, and I sure hope the opportunity presents itself to be bussed again somewhere. Until then, I ‘ll just keep my sickle in the tool shed, and by Bic Flic lighter by the fireplace. Love you guys.

  27. anon2 says:

DON’T GO! Stay in Delaware and make calls and go door to door for Coons and Carney! We need all of the rational people to remain in the state.

Maybe Stewart and Colbert should have had a “Rally for A Flat Earth” and then all of the nut jobs would be off the streets this weekend.

  28. skippertee says:

My rabies and distemper shots are now up to date. My wife has clipped my finger and toe-nails.
She will keep the muzzle available as needed.[and the C/S gas]
What would I do without her ?

  29. Suggestions for a meet-up site:

Canadian Embassy on Pennsylvania Ave. NW
    Navy Memorial-Archives Station
    Hirshorn Museum (Mall Side)

Which one is best, people who know DC?
Also, what time? I suggest 11:30

  30. Jason330 says:

Rally around me. I’ll be carrying the giant wooden peace sign that I’ve carried to every demonstration since 1972.

  31. anon2 says:

The easiest place to meet is the WWII Memorial, but DON’T GO, stay in Delaware and knock on doors for Coons and Carney!

Or meet at the Korean War Memorial, the one that took longer to build with Glen Urquhart at the helm than the Korean War took to fight….

  32. skippertee says:

NOW I remember you, Jason. At NIXON’S inauguration, didn’t I ask you if you would nail me to your peace sign? And you said,”Hey man, don’t you think that’s a little far out?”
And I said,”Yeah,I guess it is, but I’m fucking flying on this kick-ass Owsley, man.”
    Remember?
Or am I hallucinating a mile a minute, once again ?

  33. delacrat says:

    anon2,

you’re right. This event is so ill-timed. I’m knocking doors & telephoning for my local state rep. Because of this year’s census, next years senate and rep. district borders will be drawn. If you want to risk GOP gerrymandered districts, go and have fun, otherwise stay and work for what democracy remains.

  34. OpenMinded says:

OK, I do know a little bit about DC. IMO, as soon as I read the suggestion for the Hirschorn I thought it was a great idea. It is very recognizable. On the Mall, a big ROUND grey building right near the Big RED Smithsonian building. Not far from the Washington Monument. Near a Metro stop if you need one.

I vote for the Hirschorn, plus, if there is time after, I’d like to go there!!! Although we’ve spelled it 2 different ways on this thread, I’m not sure which is right.

  35. anon2 says:

Let me just make my plea one more time: Please don’t go! Stay in Delaware and keep making phone calls and knocking on doors!

Stewart and Colbert may be fun, but 4 years of COD in the US Senate and 2 years of Urquhart in the House taking away our freedoms and sending out the thugs and brown shirts won’t be…

  36. Free Radical says:

The rally is billed as an event for people that don’t normally attend rallies. GOTV people seem more like the rally-going type to me.

So I don’t think they should be criticized for their choice of timing.

  37. anonone says:

Sign-up to help Joe Sestak defeat Pat Toomey here:

The Coons race isn’t close, but this one is. The GOTV can make the difference in PA.

  38. heragain says:

Rally is Saturday. Vote is Tuesday. Best plan for you killjoys staying home is to drive around and look for cars. No cars means “voting D”.

I have spoken to more prospective voters, possible voters, uncommitted voters and persuadable voters in the last 3 months than in 32 years of political activism. I’m pretty sure I can spend one day with people who have a sense of humor without the structure of our Democracy entirely collapsing.

  39. liberalgeek says:

Anon2 – You made your point. That said, I know several people that are going with the intent of volunteering a good deal of time between now and election day. Personally, I’m doing an event tonight and scheduled to work from 5:30AM to 8:30PM on election day.

Many of us have given quite a bit and will give more before it’s all said and done.

And I have a dollar that says that you will be there on Saturday.

  40. liberalgeek says:

OK, let’s call it for 11:30 at the Hirshhorn. We will have a Delaware Meetup. Anon2 can meet us there and yell at us for not knocking on doors.

  41. cassandra m says:

Christian Science Monitor gets to see the rally lineup.

There are apps for both Android and iPhone for rally info including maps.

One of my friends can’t go — so I have one ticket for sale to the first person who emails me at Cassandra_M@delawareliberal.net.

Did you settle on the movie?

  42. I think we should vote on the movie on the bus.

  43. June says:

How do you bring wine if glass isn’t allowed?

  44. pandora says:

June, that is the best question so far!

  45. anon says:

I’m not too proud to drink box wine.

(wasn’t that on the elitism quiz?)

  46. anonone says:

You just drink it right from the box.

  47. pandora says:

    Bite your tongue!

  48. anon says:

Kegs aren’t made of glass, right?

  49. heragain says:

Pandora, you might have to decant it.

Or people could drink Sake. Be creative, y’all!

  50. cassandra m says:

Boxed wine might be the thing. The Yellow and Blue brand is awesome but I have no idea if they have a white wine. Apparently I need to run down to Veritas.

  51. MJ says:

Boxed wine? You’re kidding. OMG. I don’t know if I can hang around with you anymore. 🙂

  52. MJ says:

Just a reminder for those taking the bus to DC tomorrow – take voter lists so you can make GOTV calls from the rally.

  53. flutecake says:

I will be driving from Dover & bringing a friend. There are some other folks I know coming from the Felton area.

I may be foolish, but I am going to leave really early in order to be certain to have a decent parking place at New Carrollton WMTA station. I anticipate a large crowd!

We’ll have a nice breakfast and try to meet up with you guys!!!

I can’t wait to see how it compares to the September 2005 peace rally!

  54. OpenMinded says:

I hate to admit it, but I take the Black Box wine camping because I like the spout. It’s not bad, but it’s red wine and the rules say no red wine.

Why no red wine? If red wine were blue, could we bring it?

I am bringing donuts and coffee. First come first served!

  55. Aoine says:

    i soooooooo wish I was going…………….

please all have fun for me

  56. Joanne Christian says:

Pssst OpenMinded….red wine stains the bus upholstery. But I know, you never spill. If I was the bus company, I would ban red juice boxes too—but I guess there’s no need to worry about that!!!

  57. anon says:

I am watching it….not what I expected 2 days from an election. A real waste of time for people who hoped to hear humorous substance not sillyness.

  58. Aoine says:

sorry anon you where disappointed…. but sillyness IS more in line with what we needed

we can get back to hatred tomorrow – after church

PSSSSTTTT – you missed the message too – but then again – maybe you were not listening or just didn’t want to hear it…

  59. Joe Cass says:

Yes Aoine, the message! I got a lot of the message this morning at HuffPo
    A.Price, I hear you too.
“You and I, as fellow citizens, and we, as a country, have a choice. Either we choose to continue the cycle of inflicting violence upon each other, screaming at each other, insulting each other and putting one another down or we and find a way to sit down and start listening to each other. We’ll see how far we get.”

  60. anonone says:

“As we go marching, marching, in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray,
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing: Bread and Roses! Bread and Roses!

As we go marching, marching, we battle too for men,
For they are women’s children, and we mother them again.
    Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;
Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses.

As we go marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our singing their ancient call for bread.
Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew.
Yes, it is bread we fight for, but we fight for roses too.

As we go marching, marching, we bring the greater days,
The rising of the women means the rising of the race.
No more the drudge and idler, ten that toil where one reposes,
But a sharing of life’s glories: Bread and roses, bread and roses.

    Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;
hearts starve as well as bodies; bread and roses, bread and roses.”

    Traditional.
